Help!

I've played the game a few times, and I think I'm beginning to enjoy it, however.....it takes so damn long! Although I have turned off all animations, it still cuts to all of my workers for 2 seconds, all of my moving military units, and then all of my neighbor's local moves, making each turn last 3-5 minutes. I have a brand spanking new Pentium 4 1.6 mhz computer, so that shouldn't be the problem. Am I doing something wrong??
