in the "units.gif" (or is it jpg? i cant remember) how do you make the sea moster a unit? (the green thing that has one eye) :nuke: :egypt:

If I'm not compleatly wrong you must change rules.txt It's named something like extraXX there. Don't remember it just know.. Hope this helped somehow.

Fill in the info you want about it in an extra unit slot in the Rules.txt. Then, just cut and paste it into the graphic space (in Units.gif) which corresponds to the slot you used in the rules.

Theoretically correct but you need some special software (paint shop pro) to do this. Also I strongly urge you not to mess with your default Civ2 files.

Begin a scenario and mess with it there. Many people use a units.bmp instead of units.gif to get around the problem, you can edit units.bmp using the MS paint program from windows. You can just take a template from any of the scenarios you download - I use units.bmp exclusively myself.

Quite true. The golden rule of editing Civ2 is this: always back up your original files before messing with them! As Koby mentioned, it is less risky doing things with these files in a scenario folder (of your own making, of course. It's harder to repair damage to a downloaded scenario than the original game).

what would you do with units.gif, then?

could someone give me an example of wat i should write in "rules.txt"
and if you can't save units.gif in paint how do you save it?

Best examples are on your hard disk! Open (a copy of) the Rules.txt that came with your installation. Search for @UNITS and read the section immediately preceding it. Then ask more questions.

Reread Kobe's post above about UNITS.BMP

i sucsessfully changed the rules.txt file so that the Extra sea unit is a unit that you can get by researching magnetism ive called it a "warship" i know its probably the easiest thing to do but its my first ever mod (modification) of civ 2 that worked!!!!

allso i tryed to change units.gif it didnt work... the game wouldnt load even if i filled out the part in rules.txt for the new unit

and so you just open units.gif in paint and save it as a .bmp file and the game will still work? if it will then youll start to see some of my units on here soon. :D
