Heroic Epic Bug

Has anyone else had any luck building the heroic epic? I have 10 cities with barracks, numerous units with exp of 4 or more, done the research...and the heroic epic is not even in my list of production choices. When I look it up in the civilopedia, "barracks" is shown in red as if I don't have any yet???

You must have -

Literature, barracks in the city you want to build it in, and a unit (anywhere on the map) of 4th level or higher. (manual p.210)

I have built it several times, so it does come up properly.

Heroic Epic requires barracks AND a combat unit that has reached a level 4 promotion. You have had to win some battles to have a hero of epic status.

And you can not reach level 4 against barbarians.

That's level 4 experience (16+ XP), you understand, not 4 XP.

The Heroic Epic is a national wonder. You can only have 2 per city. Your palace counts as 1.

Agressive civs will allow a unit with 3 (10 xp) to count as long as they get the initial 'strength' promotion on creation. (Like warriors)
An aggressive civ with civics 'Vassalage' and Barracks in a city should give you all the experience you need. I may be wrong on that though, if so, Theocracy added in with a state religion in the barrack city will get it.

Everyone keeps saying that the palace counts as a national wonder, but in my last game I had the palace, the globe theater, and iron works in my capital. So the palace does not count as a national wonder for the limit of 2 per city, or the 2 per city limit is broke. I have not tested this in any other city yet.

I am almost certain I can build the heroic epic without having a level four unit. You can build it without having gone to war at all.

At least I have several times.

Also, you have to actually *promote* the unit to be able to build it. In my last game (playing as the Romans) I got a unit to 10xp and found I couldn't build the HE. As soon as I gave the unit the 3rd promotion, I was able to build it.

You may not had gone to war, but you may had accumulated so much XP off barb fights to have achieved it.

Wait until you try to build West Point. You need level 5 for that one. Took me awhile to figure that one out. I even tried moving a unit with EXACTLY 5 experience points into the city
