Hi ive just come off playing and the japanese have got samarai and my best unit i would think is the longbow man. There is absolutely no sawdust for muskateer and all the resources i have is gems. Is there any experienced civ gamers out there that can help me decide what to do next. I have a strong military and am as technologically advanced as everybody else. My main resource is gold which explains why i have a lot of money but i need help?

Well since you have some cash I suggest going and buying techs from other civs or maybe allocating more taxes to reasearch. Samaria are a strong unit indeed but are not vital to a succsess. If you cna build longbow man I suggest fortifying one on a hill or mountin along a path where the eneimes come to attack you. They will see him attempt to attack and be slautered.

Good luck! :)

Research or buy Chivalry.
Build Knights.
Knights (and of course the mighty Rider :D ) rule the middle ages.

If this isn't an option, escort your Longbows w/ Pikemen at a ratio of about 4 or 5 to 1. Since this stack'll be moving only a tile a turn, consider throwing in a couple of Catapults too.

If you don't have iron either, by this stage, you're royally f*cked. :)

Build up your technology base, or build up your military.

Otherwise The Japanese will kill you if they think they can get away with it. Fortify your borders with them.

And Knights would be pointless. They are essentially a weaker Samurai. Either build up a military so that is twice the size of The Japanese, or research towards Cannons/Cavalry etc ASAP.

Have you tried checking in with your trade advisor to see if there is any saltpeter on the market. Maybe you can buy some from another civ then you can build musketmen. Good luck.

If you're going to have to trade for Saltpeter, there's a couple of things you should do first to maximise its benefit (bearing in mind that you might only have it for 20 turns if your trading partner decides to cut you off).

Build barracks in at least all your main cities. Continue building Spearmen and accumulate as much cash as possible.

Then when you actually trade for Saltpeter you can do a mass update to turn all Spearmen into Musketmen (need to have them in a city with barracks and probably need lots of cash depending on how many spearmen you have).

One of the commonest mistakes when trading for resources is not to maximise their use when you do get your hands on them.
