Ok, I LOVE Rock music, Punk Rock, Heavy Metal, Death Metal, sum really weird German Rock, and Viking Rock. Anything about rock.

Here's a question. Is it possible, for a violinist (me) to play rock music? Electric-Violin that is.

My friends want me to join but so far none of us can figure out how my instrument can fit in. Any ideas? Its too late for me to convert to any other instruments and well... Its really hard for me to match and follow the Heavy Metal music with a violin.

Can anyone tell me if its possible?
Thx.

I had a freind in High School who tried to start a neo-baroque/rock group. They had all the standard rock intrument plus an electric cello. It was very interesting music and was sorta fun to listen to, but it just didn't work out.

It was OK using a cello for extra rythum, but I see one big problem with using a violin in rock music. The backone of Rock is three to six note chords with single notes from the bass section. The violin on the other hand is a melody instrument like the guitar, but it can only use two notes at a time to make a chord. Using single notes for melody in a music genre controlled by heavily distorted multi-note chords is adventerous at best, and impossible when trying to harmonize with a guitar which follows standard rock practice. Single notes are generally confined to rythum, but using violin for rythum...*yuck*

However, it could work if both you and the lead guitarist are music prodigies and are willing to work really hard and communicate. But your best bet if you want to stay with violin is to move into Jazz, Blues, or Classical music.

There aren't any rules about what you can and can't do. Be original and try to make it happen. If you pull it off you'll have something unique.

Good luck!

Roxy Music successfully rocked with an electric violin. If you can find an mp3 of their music, try listening to a song called 'Out of the Blue' and you will see how well they integrated it into the music. They used it kind of like you would a saxophone (of course they also used that plus an oboe in many of their songs!).

There is plenty of good rock with fiddles or violins out there. Dylan's "Hurricane" and several tracks by the Animals (particularly an incredible version of "Paint it Black" on the 'Monterey Pop' film. Strange thing is, everyone there looks like Stormerne

The Beeatles, the Who and Queen all did it, why not you?

Yeah, but he's talking about death metal. Death metal is a far cry from Beetles, the Who, Queen, or the Electric Light Orchestra. I'm not saying it can't be done, I'm saying it will take a lot of work, perhaps more than DBSD13 is ready to put forth.

Hmm...Death Metal. that could present a slight problem. I can't really picture for the life of me Yehudi Menuhin in dreadlock and a leather jacket, screaming guttural lyrics to a Beethoven concerto

Tough.
I tried to replace sum guitarist parts with violin but... really hard to find the same or even close notes to it. Also its plays a higher toned music.

But violin is easy when it comes to playing really fast music.. At least thas wat i thik.

Anyother question. How long would it take a.. 10 yrs- experience violinist to master guitar? From what I see, its all just 1 more line with 5 more notes in each.

DBSD13, listen to the early velvet underground albums. "velvet underground & nico" and the other one, i have forgot the name of it. a violin is used in a wonderful way in songs like venus in furs.

there are band from finland called apocalypsus i think, they are playing metalica cowers with cellos. i don´t know if it´s possible with a violin.
