High End Laptop Suggestions (yes, another thread on this...)

Uhhm, it must be tiny then. My 22" weighs more than double my laptop, and my laptop aint light ( 8lb maybe?)

I don't know how to measure a monitor, and then I don't know what "tiny" means. It's about the same size as mine.

By the diagonal. And yeah, it must be tiny unless your comparing it to a CRT.

I have a CRT, but it'd be nice to have an flat LCD, 'cos there's hardly any room on my desk as is.

You mentioned the size of LCDs compared to CRTs. So I said that a flat LCD is smaller (ok, flatter) so I'd like one.

I've lifted up mom's and its not heavy compared to mine, about the same screensize.

I can barely lift my CRT.

Yeah same, but its a CRT. Its big and heavy. It has a thick glass panel and tube. LCD's arent all that light though either. Mine is around 12lb, which is more than the weight of most notebooks.

lol... ok, ok, the thought is good - and taking a smaller computer around would work between work and home, as I have monitors in both locations as well as accessories, but it may limit my mobility in the house a bit. I've been kinda spoiled by the previous laptop being able to be anywhere with the wireless network (ok, since it was such a battery hog, I'll have to amend that to 'anywhere I can plug it in or run an extension cord...')

So, though I was initially excited, the more I htink about it I may still look at laptops...

Okay, so in my doubts about my future choice of laptop, I have spent the last 4 hours just looking online. Found some great stuff actually. MSI has some very nicely spec'd laptops, and Sager may have just what you need:
http://www.sagernotebook.com/product_customed.php?pid=129131&action=customize
Its damned expensive (1800USD starting) but its basically the best of what you can get in a laptop right now. Just note, that the 1800USD is starting. To actually get the Core 2 Extreme Processor, you gotta add another 915USD to the price.

So far, my bang-for-the-buck find has been the Dell XPS 1730. Looks like I can get what I want there (Intel T9300 processor, 4G ram, 19x12 resolution dual SLI Intel 512 cards, 320GB/7200RPM HDD) for right at $2000. (This is in part due to a sale running, about $230 bucks off this system...)

Stll like the Alienwares, but they're more like 2800 and 3400, depending on the style.

I did run a similar system on that Sager site, and got a comparable system (with a better processor, I think, in the T9800) for about $2350 - not bad at all. The option to pay an EXTRA 200 bucks to get a no-dead-pixels guarantee worries me a little bit, though - seems like that is something that comes standard with the baseline warranties on the Dell, etc sites.

I think the Dell and other natl. brand warranties cover a certain number of dead pixels, such as 8 or 5 or something like that. Really sucks when you end up with 1 less than their limit in a very conspicuous place ( like right in the middle of the lcd panel )
Also: Intel SLI? lol
I think you meant dual nVidia 9800GT's

lol... yeah, that's what I get for posting before the first cup of coffee... :) Oh, well, that is indeed what I meant...

If anyone is still curious about this (or shopping themselves and want a few ideas) here is my current list of possibilities, in no particular order:

(note: all systems include a 17' 1900x1200 display, 4G RAM, and a 320G/7200 RPM HDD.)

(Note #2: This list may have errors, typos, or just stupid stuff caused by me not paying attention. :) be warned!)

Sager NP5797, $2349: T9800 processor (2.93G dual core, 1066 FSB, 6M L2 cache), GeForce GTX280M 1G video card
Pros: lower price for the list, fast processor. Cons: need to research Sager and the vid card, as I'm not familiar with either.

Sager NP9262, $2734 (or $3429): Q9650 (3.0G quad, 1333 FSB, 12M L2 cache), GeForce 9800M GTX 1G video card
Pros: probably most capable processor I've looked at, I think. <$3000. Could go for SLI setup and get dual 9800M GTX for another 700ish, bringing the price to $3429. Cons: high price on the SLI model, and I think that's a desktop processor (isn't that what Sager uses in the laptops?) so I'm concerned about heat issues.

Dell XPS M1730, $2029 on sale: T9300 processor (2.5G dual, 800 FSB, 6M l2 cache) dual GeForce 9800M GT, (with sale, $234 off till June)
Pros: second lowest price found for decent gaming system, 2 year warranty standard (most others on this list have 1 year std). I even like the design... Cons: none, really, except slight performance decrease, but it's a lower cost system in this list.

Alienware M17, $2853: T9600 processor (2.8G, 1066 FSB, 6M l2 cache), dual 512 M ATI Radeon HD 3870 video cards
Pros: backlit keyboard and eye candy, price includes some additional options (lightscribe burner, laptop cooler/stand, carry case) Cons: like the eye candy, but don't really like the case fo some reason. Pricey option due to alienware name. Unfamiliar with ATI drivers.

Alienware M17X, $3252: T9300 processor (2.5G, 800 FSB, 6M l2 cache), dual 512 M GeForce 9800 GT (SLI)
Pros: x-series alienware, so all the cool eye candy (as above on M17). Cons: older x-series, so newer components actually available on M17 (or so it seems to me), second highest price on the list, still not fond of the case.

Sager 5793, $1594 on sale: T9300 processor (2.5G, 800 FSB, 6M L2 cache), 1G GeForce 9800M GTS video card, (closeout:includes $700 off from Sager)
Pros: lowest price on the list by a bunch, still seems to be a good performing system. Cons: as mentioned, unfamiliar with Sager. Oh, and the only case choice left in stock is the orange trim... :(

So, there you go, friends and neighbors. Any input on any of the systems here, or anything else I should check out?

I should mention, too, that all systems represent as close as possible to my personal 'sweet spot' where price and technology meet. Some can be upgraded further, but the cost was too steep for me compared to the performance I'd get in return. (Example: the T9300 processors could be upgraded to X9000 2.8G processors, but I'm not planning on overclocking, and so the $600 for an additional .3G speed wasn't attractive to me... )

Still, if anyone has thoughts, I'd cheerfully listen - and if you're just browsing for high end laptops, that's what I found - may give you some ideas as to what's out there...

Some of the things I'm curious about are the difference front speed bus and RAM speed (667 vs 800) make in high end gaming performance (if any!) and if anyone has had heat issues - I'm incredibly afraid of heat issues based on past laptop experience (I don't mean 'My legs get too warm" hot, I mean, "The laptop overheats and shuts down" hot.... :) )

Sager NP9262 doesnt look like a good choice. Its packed with desktop processors, and some very hot running ones. I wouldnt trust it to not overheat.

Found another high-end notebook:
http://www.xoticpc.com/asus-w90vpa1-p-2562.html?wconfigure=yes
I think Bit-tech or Toms Hardware recently did an article on the difference between lower latency RAM and higher speed RAM. They compared low-latency DDR2 800 RAM to standard DDR2 1066 RAM and the DDR2 1066 RAM won in all cases. YMMV, but its a safe bet that 800 will be faster than 667, although I wouldnt know how much of a difference it would make.

Id recommend going for a desktop if you intend on gaming.
