Does anyone know of way to get a higher screen resolution for Alien Crossfire under OSX 10.6? I've managed to get it to run by installing it onto a PPC Mac, then dragging the files over to my Intel based iMac and downloading the carbon patch, but I'd love to have something bigger than 1024x768 on my 27" iMac :)

I saw this thread
http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=118326
which explains how it's done under Windows, but I can't seem to find any "alpha centauri.ini" file on my Mac... Does anyone know if it's hidden somewhere, or if the information is in some other file? I tried to create the file myself, saving it with Western European (Mac OS Roman) text encoding in a .txt file, and then renaming it from .txt to .ini. Although everything seemed to be in order, SMACX still started in 1024x768... Moreover, when I look at the info of the .ini file, it shows the name as Alpha Centauri.ini with the checkbox saying "Hide file extension" as checked and greyed out, making me suspect that the file's proper name is not actually Alpha Centauri.ini but rather .ini.something-I-can't-see... If that would be the problem, does anyone know how to fix it?

Also, I'm playing Alien Crossfire. Does the Windows version use another .ini for SMACX than it does for SMAC? Like a Alien Crossfire.ini or something like that (I tried that one already, though).

if i'm not mistaken, in windows alpha centauri.ini will appear in FIRST time when you start playing smac or smacx AFTER installation.

make sure you add the DirectDraw=0 ( or 1) after the [Alpha Centauri] line not [PREFERENCES] one.

Thanks for the reply (although lot of stuff happened and I never got around to tinkering with SMAC again until now). I've done some more digging and it seems that the Mac version doesn't use .ini files at all, so I have to get it to work by other means. (But on the bright side, that explains why I couldn't find the .ini file :P )

I've located a preference file called "Alien Crossfire Prefs" under ~/Library/Preferences and it does seem to get updated by the Alien Crossfire application (judging by the last modified date corresponding to whenever I quit the program). However, when I try to open the preference file in TextEdit (or TextWrangler) it shows up as empty. There's another file, SMACX Carbon.plist that seems to contain only the location of the autosaves and doesn't get modified when I change settings within Alien Crossfire, so I'm guessing it won't provide any solutions.

When I hold down option when starting the program, I can choose from a few settings and when I start the program later, those settings are remembered. Obviously, there is some preference file somewhere that remembers my settings so I'm suspecting one of two things: 1) The Prefs does actually contain useful information, but it's encoded in a way that I can't see it, or 2) there's another file somewhere that functions as the "real" prefs file, but I can't seem to find out where it should be. I'm not able to "show package contents" for the app SMACX Carbon either...

Anyone have any clue?
