I've only played vanilla civ6, but now ready to start R&F. I know there are era's and loyalty, but any hints on how to learn R&F quickly coming from vanilla?

Thank you

So is it better to avoid dark ages as much as possilble, or suffer a dark age to hope to get better goldern age? For dom/sci victories, are any governors essential?

Governors are not importance any more than civics. Nice add but minimal effect on game play. There was one post, I guess I'll have to see if i can find it again, where the poster said in R&F it's actually better to endure a dark age because if you handle it well then the next golden age will be three times as powerful. Has anyone seen that behavior? Only in first R&F game, so I have no experience.

I found the quote:

Here's the lead designer Anton Strenger on the subject:
While a Golden Age provides one Dedication bonus (a powerful Golden Age effect), being in a Heroic Age lets the player earn three Dedication bonuses (making it sort of a “triple” Golden Age).

So that's the design, but do you experience it in gameplay?

It's harder to have a fast game with dark age for most civ.
Governors varies greatly with map type and player strategy.

Amani first:
  • use Amani to rotate around CS can quickly scout the map and easier to get into GA.
  • if hero mode is on, she can help you find heros.
  • meets AI earlier, sell lux for cash earlier
Ma first:
  • beeline Early Empire and chop settlers for wide expansion
Pingala first:
  • fast tech and civic and GP generation
Dom and Sci victory have different setups in the beginning.

It's better to try their strategy and see which one you like better.

It's all about early opportunity cost and player's strategy. IMHO, golden age is like settlers and 1k cash, the earlier you have them the better.

However, in a recent 6otM 167, @Michael Lindskou was very smart and strategically set up around the leader's UA and dark age (utilize all the benefit of dark age and nullified the negative effects).
CV turn 155

I decided to stay on 4 cities until the end of classical, during the classical im ade sure to max growth via traderoutes and chops. I should mention it was a dark age Clkassical era luckly the bakuhan trait gives 100% loyalty to all cities within 6 tiles so did have to battle loyalty, all most the full era I had the dark card Isoalism in (2+f+2p) to traderoutes + surplus magnus in my cap.

my classical traderoutes

Feel free to join 6otM. Discussion on the same game settings will probably better answer your questions.
