In a recent game on a standard map with 5 civs remaining and I was about ten to fifteen turns from completing the Space Ship, I was in a nasty world war. China and Korea were against me, France was on my side, and Japan was neutral. My core/spaceship cities were near the Chinese border, so I wanted peace. I built a few nukes just before they opened up negotiations, and when the refused peace, I let them have it. The quickly made peace, as did Korea, now against the #1 and #3 civs(China was #2). Has anyone else tried to nuke other civs into a peace treaty?

Normally, when I use nukes, it doesn't make my opposing civ(s) desire peace, it makes them want to destroy me even more. And once the MPP/MA with France ends, they probably won't want a piece of it again as they're probably Furious/Annoyed with you already by just using those nukes. So be careful, France might join the Axis side and Japan just might declare war on you soon since you used nukes.

The world view towards you changes drastically once a nuke is thrown. But if you got peace by using them, more power to you...but wait a few more turns, and be careful.

T'is Cawabunga Dude!

Using nukes will in fact get you into trouble, as you’d suffer a terrible reputation hit.
But then again, if you’re just a couple of turns away from victory, it should be okay…

Like with all military units, nukes are mostly used to prevent the others from attacking you (pretty much like cold war I guess), probably they wanted peace because you have such a strong army. If you used just one nuke, it's quite possible that they accepted peace, but after throwing 4 or 5 nukes on your enemy, even gracious civs turn angry.

I had just used 15 ICBMs and 4 tacticals in my PBEM game in a nuclear strike. :) When I use nukes, I want to exterminate them and cripple their empire horribly, not when I want peace. ;)

And in my that PBEM game, my having more nukes than them didn't stop them fr declaring war and marching into the coastline I held on their continent. They probably sensed something, fr the massive military buildup (I'd have attacked in a few more turns). The AI seemed smart, sometimes. :)
