RK HISTORICAL STILL LEADERS MOD v0.5

This mod allows you to replace all animated and still images of the leaders in Civ3 with historical or otherwise well-known still images of the same leaders.(*) The pack also includes a few alternative leaders for the included civs (Napoleon, Henry V, FDR) which I happened to have around.

UPSIDES:

(1) Perhaps you think the leader animations are silly and want the game to be more serious looking. I didn't make this for that reason at all, but it's a thought.

(2) Now, you can create a new civ's leader (e.g. Gustavus Adolphus of the Swedes) consistent with all of the other leaders in about five minutes. Or I can, anyway, and you can if you try and you have the right software.

DOWNSIDE:

(1) Less animation, less interest, arguably.

(2) Leader images no longer reveal their moods or eras. This information is available in other places, but it is an important downside.

(3) Leader images for the endgame no longer are reflective of the nature of the victory. This may make some of the end-of-game victory screens seem a bit strange. This does not of course affect gameplay.

I would like to remedy (2) & (3) in future versions by adopting some simple device to indicate the moods and the victory types. I very much would like to hear suggestions for this. But I want to keep it simple & systematic. I don't want to edit the faces to make them smile or scowl. The point is to be able to decide "I think I'll play the Assyrians" and then be able to do so with a decent image for Ashurbanipal in 5 minutes.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

I debated how to do this. For now, I've decided to make it less newbie-friendly and more customizable, rather than the other way around. (I also wanted to hurry it out for further development.) So, in essence, installation is manual. I'm going to tell you how the leaders work in Civ3, and you can figure out where to put which files.

Here's how the leader images in Civ3 work. There are 3 relevant folders (BACK THEM UP before you mess with them):

(1) /Art/Flics

This folder contains the animations. The replacement still animation for any given leader in my mod are in that leader's folder, and have the leader's name with extension FLC. The first two letters indicate which leader they represent:

AB = Lincoln (Americans)
AL = Alexander (Greeks)
BS = Bismarck (Germans)
CA = Catherine (Russians)
CE = Caesar (Romans)
CL = Cleopatra (Egyptians)
GH = Gandhi (Indians)
HA = Hammurabi (Babylonians)
HI = Miawatha (Iroquois)
JO = Joan of Arc (French)
LZ = Elizabeth (English)
MN = Montezuma (Aztecs)
MO = Mao (Chinese)
TO = Tokugawa (Japanese)
XE = Xerxes (Persians)
ZU = Shaka (Zulu)

To install this mod replace all FLCs beginning with the relevant leader's two letters with a copy of the FLC file bearing the leader's name that comes with the mod.

(2) /Art/Advisors

This folder contains the circular heads that appear on the Foreign Advisor screen. The are called by the leader's two letters, then _all.pcx. Replace this file with the file called by the leader's name ending in _all.pcx that come with this mod.

(3) /Art/leaderheads

These are the leader images for the end of the game. If ?? stands for the leader's letters, they are:

??.pcx 200x240 image of leader
??_ANG.pcx 200x240 image of angry leader
??_CONQ.pcx 200x240 image of defeated leader
??_CONQ_L.pcx 120x150 image of defeated leader
??_CULT.pcx 120x150 image of leader with hearts
??_CULTB.pcx 120x150 image with leader in tiny "porthole"
??_HAP.pcx 200x240 image of leader smiling
??_KIS.pcx 200x240 image of leader covered in kiss marks
??_SHAP.pcx 120x150 image of smiling leader
??_SKIS.pcx 120x150 image of leader covered in kiss marks

This early version of the mod comes with a 200x240 image of the leader and a 120x150 image of the leader. Replace all images with the appropriate size image. I have not yet created an image suitable to replace ??_CULTB.pcx.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

I hope you enjoy the mod. I am eagerly seeking suggestions of all kinds. If you send images to me, please keep them under 100K. Please feel free to take this and run with it. In other words, if you want to create your own leader pack and include these, or improve upon it, or whatever, please do. Just email me about it... I'll want a copy!

I used JASC Paint Shop Pro 7 and the accompanying Animation Shop 3 to create these files.

(*)With 2 exceptions. First, Cleopatra is replaced by a (beautiful) bust of Nefertiti because (a) there are very few or no good images of Cleopatra and (b) Nefertiti was a stronger leader in Egyptian history anyway. You can easily change the name to Nefertiti in CivEdit if you choose. Second, there are no decent representations of Montezuma, who is represented by a photo of a pyramid at Teotihuacan and an Aztec calendar-disk.

Rk, you forgot to attach the file. :)

Can you also post an in game screenshot showing the leaders?

Oh. My file is too big. The file is about 1.8 Megs. Apparently 500K is the max? Any suggestions?

Here is one screenshot.

Thunderfall---

I did a lot more work on this tonight so the version I sent you is outdated. The new version is 14MB (!). Is that too big to email you and/or for civfanatics to serve?

I discovered several paletting/transparency problems in v0.5 that make it rather worthless. Version 1.0 also installs easily.

I'd like to post it on a new thread actually, since I changed the name slightly, and this thread is messy.

Another screenshot, from v1.0.

Looks very interesting. I'll be following this closely. :)

One major downside (with the game) in replacing the leader pictures, as far as scenarios are concerned, is that they make scenarios so god damn big. I wish Firaxis would just put in an option to simply turn them all OFF, so one can play a historical scenario without all the fuddly leaders.

I do admit, they are great for the normal game, and look incredibly alive, as they move their heads slightly in negotiations. But they take up so much space, so I have a difficult time seeing ordinary scen-makers replacing so much artwork.

But your work is definitely interesting. Keep it up! :) Hopefully Firaxis will include options to make a "simple" option for leader pics in their patches and updates. So one doesn't have to duplicate a zillion files in order to make it appear straight.

Thanks for the interest. The reason the files aren't up yet is size as well. Replacing all of the leader images in the game runs at 14MB or so. The FLC files are the real problem.

I have used a BAT install file which cuts the file size of my Mod down to a much more reasonable 4MB. Thunderfall, can you serve that if I email it to you? Any other volunteers with civ ftp sites?

If FIRAXIS doesn't change anything to make new leaders more streamlined, here is my vision for leaders for the Mod community: a separate database of leaders in a simple systematic format like I am trying to start, which can be pointed to by a Mod designer. Thus, those who want to deal with the leaders can and those who don't want to don't have to.

For example, if you design a WWII scenario, you can just cite the Leader repository and suggest your downloader go get FDR, Hitler, Stalin, Mussolini, Hirohito, Churchill etc. from there.
