I hate being yanked from one unit to the next, and having to answer all the popups in the order they appear, so I play with No Unit Cycling and Minimize Popups.
I then use enter to cycle through all units that need orders. This works fine most of the time. Give a command, hit enter. Repeat until doing so ends the turn.
The problem is that the game's behavior changes when you give a command to the last unit. At this point, you no longer need to hit enter for it to yank you to the next thing. These things are popups. Popups have a default option, which in a brilliant achievement of game design, is selected when you hit enter.
Because the behavior changes, my routine of do a thing, hit enter screws up badly when I reach the first popup. The enter is interpreted not as "go to the next thing" but as "Yes, I want to switch to Theocracy despite not having a state religion! I ENJOY having revolutions!"
Interestingly, the "choose research" popup will stick around and jump out at you without warning, even if you've already chosen a new tech to research. Occasionally, I hit enter exactly when it comes up, and I don't even see it, but hitting enter caused me to switch to researching one of the recommended techs. This is also pretty annoying when a couple turns later, I discover that I've been researching something lame instead of a good tech.
Has anyone else been annoyed by this? Has anyone found a solution?
