In case you're wondering what I'm talking about, refer to the picture below. Before you come to the conclusion that I'm insane, there's more at the bottom;

(Rendition taken from the edge. Magenta sun is in the center and bright light above that is supposedly the other opening at the south pole)

This kind of map style would be a great addition to the map styles we already have in Civ 4. It would at least make an awesome framework for a Jules Verne like scenario in future or could be a great new challanging map to play on! Basically there would be two full sized maps. Except the only way you could reach either maps would be to go through the north and south poles. Much like the donut world in the Call to Power series.

Obviously two maps at the same time would be more memory taxing than usual but I think that it would be worth it.

Could be fun from a fantasy perspective, but you do know that anything in the interior of that thing would experience no gravity, right?

Well according to hollow earth theory, the center of gravity is supposedly in the shell of the earth itself. Should say on that top picture. Center of gravity 400 miles below.

And plus it's just a game. :D

Hmmm...how exactly would this type of map visibly differ? It would be larger, but it would have poles at top and bottom and be essentially the same as what we have now. the only major difference is that the globe would be concave instead of convex.

I suppose you could think about it as a donut. A donut that is shaped like a ball but hollow in the middle. How it could be executed is either have two maps back to back and have the north and south poles of each map meet or it could be one huge map and when you cross the dividing line between the surface and underworld, it will be like hardly a change since according to "accounts" I've read on the matter on the internet that from an ants eye view it would look like you're still sailing on the ocean when in fact you've already sailed into the Earth. Perhaps a map that's a little taller and have the north and south poles tied together and the east and west tied together and have the middle of the map seperated by polar tiles and have a little passage. Although how to properly display this when going into globe view would be somewhat difficult.

This is sorta similar to a Dyson Sphere, except on a much smaller scale, isn't it?

If you don't know what a Dyson Sphere is, its a large sphere built around a star. The inside diameter of the sphere is about equal to the Earth's orbit of the sun. The idea is that all of the internal surface would then have an earthlike atmosphere and be able to support an almost unimaginable population. It's basically just like Niven's Ringworld, except as a complete sphere.

I personally have never heard of this "Hollow Earth" concept. Could really make for an interesting map in Civ, but I wouldn't know how to implement it.

with all of these futurists it was always the same problem for me. Both Niven and Dyson failed to recognise transhumanism.

what use is a physical body when you have a technological substitute having a cluoud of either smart matter or nanoparticulate that bends to the will of the mind inhabiting it.

That would be incorrect.

With a perfect sphere like that, gravity from one side cancels gravity from the other side no matter where you are within the spherical, hollow center. It's been a long time since I've done the math for that, but trust me on that. Ask any physics professor.

*rant mode on*

A quick Google search has made me realize to my absolute horror that rather than just being a quaint Victorian theory, there are those who subscribe to this today. The human race never ceases to amaze me. Just when I think they've thought just about every stupid thing there is to think, somebody throws me a screwball. Even passing search revealed that this world is home to alien races, Atlanteans and Lemurians, and of course, Big Foot. I mean, do these people just think that if you imagine something it therefore is true?

*rant mode off*

That said, within the confines of this being a fantasy scenario in the spirit of Jules Verne and not in any way a promotion of the "hollow earth theory" I think it sounds good.

An easier concept for a first stab at this sort of thing would be the Donut World, which basically makes the map wrap around top to bottom as well as side to side. It's easier to picture it working if you have a long, narrow map. Once we figure out how to do that, we can start with more complex versions. :)

That'd be an excellent basis to start out with a donut world. However how to view the inside would be rather difficult. But until sophisticated tools are released, it'd be very difficult to do it. Or would it?

There's a donut map already available:

I'd be interested in seeing this, so I hope you make a breakthrough! :)

Wow that's wacked out but fascinating. I went earlier to wikipedia and I saw this:

Global Cassus
Both Intimidating and Fascinating

I'm guessing you missed the whole "religion" thing.
