What do these promotions/abilities do? Say a unit has +1 unholy combat, like the drown? Does that mean it gets +1 strength when fighting a good civilization, or is it something more arcane than that? I have searched through the civilopedia exhaustively and cannot find an answer on this.

It gets +1 strength against anything that doesn't resist/immune unholy (so pretty much anything other than demons and other undead.)

Unholy damage: doesn't bother the undead or demons. EDIT: Undead resist, but are not immune to, unholy damage.
Holy damage: doesn't bother angels, does extra damage to undead or demons.
Don't quote me on this, but I think magic immune units are immune to both holy and unholy.
Just checked. Magic resistance/immunity confers no special defense against holy or unholy strength.

Elemental damage just acts like an extra strength against most units. Several units are strong/weak to certain elements however, and these bonuses will to less/more damage to them, respectively.
