Homebuilt Sentry Gun

reminds me of this gun...

There are those things in the world that are uplifting, provoking, or inspiring. And there are those things that are friggin' awesome.

I've occasionally thought of installing something like this in the ceiling of my house - extensive from points in hallway, and living areas.

No need to worry about intruders any longer - in fact, I think I might relish their attempts... Dodgy.

Bah. Takes all the fun out of creeping around knifey when a noise stirs you after hours of no sleep.

No thanks.

Neat, they should sell them comercially.

You pay him? He does mine for kicks.

Well, yes, the castrations themselves are free, but I opt for the extras which cost money.

Not to be a killjoy, but if you use that sentry gun (and fit it with an actual gun rather than an Airsoft) and someone in your home gets killed by it, you're going up for at least manslaughter, if not murder, and then you'll have a civil wrongful death lawsuit to lose.

That aside, this guy has done some very good work; I'd recommend changing the Airsoft to a paintball gun where the paint is bright, glow-in-the-dark, very difficult-to-remove ink (and maybe tiny RFID chips?) if you want to use it for home-defense applications.

You could knock something down with that, where does one go about getting one of those. And you would never have to worry about the Jehovah's Witnesses coming to your house anymore. I respect that they have such devotion to their religion, but it's just annoying them coming around so often.

I live on a road that's about 2 miles long with about only 20 other people on it and I still occasionally get them.

Yea, it would be useful for deterring jehovah's witnesses, and shooting annoying pigeons.

If someone were to arm a gun like this with indelible ink paintballs, and make it allow people to say a password to get by, it would be a very good anti-theft weapon.

If the potential burglar gets some in their eyes, you're also up for a legal slap - actually, it seems, if the burglar receives mental anguish resulting from that you'll be up for a slap.

"I thought it was a real gun..."

It's my understanding such sentry guns are not used by the military is because of the potential for inappropriate killing - such as where a child chases after a ball into a live fire/restricted area at midnight...

Thus the only applicable use for automated sentry guns is secret military bases in the middle of a desert. Uninhabited except for rattlesnakes and vultures, nobody ever strays in.

With 5 meter high chain-link fences, barbed wire and minefields to clear before encountering these babies, anything that gets this far can be safely assumed to be spies or saboteurs, so shoot away. :ar15:

Something interesting... I think in one of the tests, the sentry gun actually analyzes and measures the supposed "weapon" the target is using. It could just be my imagination though. However, I'd think that military grade sentry guns would be able to measure and identify weapons... and possibly even shoot them out of the target's hands? (or immobilize it with a paintball full of glue, or something) Interesting applications.

I'd definately build one of these to fire glow in the dark paintballs... the theif wouldn't stand a chance. The only problem I can see is getting it on the carpet, so I'd probably want the kind of paint that comes out when washed with detergent.

(Watch the theives of the future start carrying around boxes of laundry detergent wherever they go... )

I don't think anybody here is thinking about building one to fire live ammo though... that'd seriously mess up your apartment. (Bullet holes, blood stains, yeeach)
