Now there is a installment playing on PBS of the American Experience called "Hoover Dam". If you live in this country, go and see it. It must be seen to be appreciated. It truly is one of the great wonders of the world.

At a time when cynics were saying that capitalism was dead and Communism and Fascism were the governments of the future; the great Depression was in full swing, Hoover Dam, like the Empire State Building and the TVA, was completed under time and under budget.

I was lucky enough to see it when i was age 16. It's something you just cannot forget.

It is easy to finish under time and budget if they cracked the whip.

TVA is an airline isn't it??

I don't live in the USA but I have seen the Hoover Dam.

Awesome sight - it truly is a wonder of the modern world, like the WTC.

I take my hat off to the inudtrious Americans.

TVA - Tennesse Vallay Authority.
A works project that built dams around the southern US to put the masses of unemployed to work during the great depression. Also to help electrify rural America.

Not as many that died building the Pyramids.

And how many people died building the Hoover Dam?
Now that's something that should be considered as a way to rush a wonder. With a modern gov't rushing only costs money, but rushing a wonder could cost lives like in despotism, etc.

I prefer the lesser known one that helped to electrocute rural America. :D

The fact that so few know what the Tennessee Valley Authority was - and that some people can't even spell "valley" - proves the dismal state of public education in America.

Zouave - I'm at work screwing off and was typing fast and didn't notice the "vallay" error until I submitted it... opps... I beg your forgivness and understanding. And you can thank the U of Minnesota too.

when the Boulder Dam was built,a high scaler was paid the unheard of sum of $5.25 per hour.$5.75 if you could handle a jack hammer. And that was how many years ago?

People get less than that today.

Not in the US. Min wage is 5.75 an hour. You can only earn less in a job that has tipping, or as an underage worker, and then only by permit.

The fed min wage also doesn't apply to some agricultural jobs. State mins apply to those.

Aren't we jumping to a conclusion in damning the American education system when one Swede and two unknowns don't know what the TVA was? I agree that the system is pathetic, but I'd expect a firmer basis for blasting it from someone who wants to do so. Spelling errors on an Internet post also don't merrit much attention either, unless widespread in their frequency.

The fallacy of the logic of your statement might indicate (Not prove) the dismal state of the system in which you were educated.

haha:lol:

Well one of them was Swedish and i know another of them was New Zealander, so we all know how brilliant the education systems are in those countries :-) (wasn't being sarcastic, seriously supreme education systems )

I agree about the computer typing, my keyboard misses letters a lot, I don't watch the screen when i type so hence many missed letters from me, also the gramma, gee i intentionally use bad gramma in forums, it makes it a little less serious, and less like essay writing. ;)

I am now pleased to know about this authority and about the Hoover dam, thanks guys.
