Horrible Start: Trapped in the Mountains

What map script?
Highlands. Reminds me of an AI that started on a 1-tile island and went to work on the GW.

Rainforest is also possible.

For anyone interested in trying it out, here is my 3700 BC (with free second settler, fishing, and sailing bonus). The map is quite interesting with many choke points, and most civs in semi-isolation early in the game.

What version of Civ 4 was this for? (which expansions)

Spoiler :
settled 1N. got extra scout from hut. met mao. depending on resources (guessing none, hence the difficulty) how to proceed(?)

Well work boats, if they're buildable, and I think settle NNNE of the capital (if you can settle on jungle? I'm rusty.)

I believe at some point you'll need another city on a lake for trade routes. And with those golds, it would take a while to be able to work both of them, so best to settle NNNE.

IMM/normal T39
Spoiler :
Should be a relatively easy game. Yes land is bad but I presume so is the AI land.

Settling 1N would also make things easier, mostly due to ability to share food and a good use for the sugar.

Not sure I can see the issue.

Sure, it's pretty awkward to have to beeline Sailing and build a Galley before you can expand, but the start is seaside, not lakeside, so why would there be a need for a "magic galley"?

Earlier posts make it clear that you can't build a Galley. The southern body of water must not have enough tiles to allow it.

@sampsa How are you going to get a trade route connection to the second city? Please ELI5, if you could, because I might have forgotten something fundamental about the mechanics.

Spoiler alert

Spoiler :
There are iron and ivory to the west. So swordsman conquest or elepult warfare will be possible.

there already is a connection, you can see :traderoute: if you zoom in the screenshot.

You guys might get a laugh out of this one. I deleted the magic galley and turned on no tech trade, one city challenge, and no random events. Seemed like a fair case.

Spoiler :

Unfortunately, I waited until 1984 for someone to build a road to the river. Its literally -105 science. I was first first to liberalism (Constitution), and first to Apollo, but I'm pretty sure I'm going to lose this one. Might try again, also made some missteps playing rusty.

Haha, that is amazing. I have never played a OCC game with this kind of setting. Is it pretty hard to win?

It is quite doable. This particular scenario is rather hard because there are many tiles that are invalid or functionally unavailable, which means getting to the requisite 1000+ BPT benchmark is a bit difficult.

Spoiler :

I'll call this one a "theoretical" win. I haven't lost yet, but with Hammurabi joining Victoria and Montezuma in capitulation to Mao, and Mao with 3 U.N. resolutions passed, he could "theoretically" win a "diplomatic" victory at any point.

It would take another 13-14 turns to build the final two casings to secure 100% chance of arrival, and 16 turns to arrive with 3 thrusters.

Some notable changes compared to the last play-through.

1. Switch back from quick to normal speed to minimize the penalty of turns of anarchy from civic switches.
2. 1240 BC Oracle --> Civil Service trick with an Academy built, delaying Monarchy for a bit.
3. 1160 AD Liberalism for Constitution
4. ~1200 AD - Victoria founds the city of Leeds, building a road and linking us to the global trade network. This is huge.
5. 1450 AD - Economics researched in the middle of a golden age from a delayed Taj Mahal, granting the great person for +1 food and anarchy free swap to the Free Markets.
6. 1790 AD - completion of Broadway, in the hopes of trading Hit Musicals one day for Aluminum and Copper. Discovery of Superconductors for the last science building.
7. 1802 AD - Montezuma capitulates to Mao.
8. 1908 AD - Completion of the Apollo Program.
9. 1943 AD - Victoria capitulates to Mao with barely a fight. We finally obtain aluminum via trade.
10. 1981 AD - discovery of Fusion, triggering the 3rd and last golden age
11. 1986 AD - Hammurabi capitulates to Mao after losing 1 city, setting a ticking time bomb for the next series of U.N. elections.
12. 2003 AD - Discovery of Genetics, ending the need for further space technology.
13. 2013 AD - Finishing the last flight minimum component, - SS Stasis Chamber.

I guess one could argue that if I went back to the saves somewhere between 1943 and 1986, I could eventually re-roll and outcome where Mao doesn't earn two relatively cheap capitulations, but that wouldn't be quite sporting.
