Horseman to Knight or not

My Horseman won't upgrade to knight. They'll upgrade to calvery ok, at a cost. Leonardo's is very important to the scheme of things, but with the Samari wanting to churn things up on my western border, it can't be built to soon. Is there a download to jumpstart these horseman that don't want to put on their armor? I'm in the 1.07f first edition and think we need a patch.

You need horses AND iron to upgrade to knights. If you have Military Tradition, then it'll upgrade to cavs. BTW, get the 1.29 patch. It's much better (and fixes a space victory bug). Now, if you didn't have saltpeter, and had iron and horses, you'd be able to upgrade to knights.

Once you can upgrade Horseman to Calvery is there even an option to upgrade only to a Knight?

Editted due to above reply...

Interesting... disconnect the saltpeter and you can upgrade to Knight (tonight?) :) to avoid the cost of going all the way to Cav. Well, if you don't have the cash for the Cav upgrade then I guess that's an option. (If you pillage your own tile I think there should be a propability that the local militia would mistake the action as hostile and automatically rip the offending unit to shreds. )

I think I would pull back the tech slider for a few turns and go for the full upgrade and decisive advantage over your Japanese buddies who have a 4 defense.

Good solution JB1964.
One must remember to check the affect from traded resources as well. If you have traded to receive the resource I don't think this will work. ??

If you trade to receive the resource, it counts as having the resource.

Well, thanks for all of the good intentions ya'll! But yes, I have iron and obviously horses. Only after achieving MilTra did the salt peter show up. And it was already w/road. This is a problem I've always had with this game. Only I've not known about patching and fixes. Guess I have worked to much for only now (the past couple of weeks) have I found this web site in the hopes of finding some answers to the several questions I've had for the past fewyears. Cheiftess, the suggestion about the 1.29 patch sounds likethe ticket. Thanks - I'll go look for it. What do ya do? Save it to a disc? Well, spose I'll find out - when in doubt - read the directions. :)

Bet your Knight is your UU (unique unit).
In the early edition of CIV III, you couldn't upgrade to your UU.
So, if you played India or China, you could not upgrade Charriot nor horseman to Rider / War Elephant.
The latest patch solved this issue.

Since you mentioned upgrading to samurai, I would assume you are Japan? You can also disconnect your horses and not your saltpeter. You do not need horses for samurai, and you can still build any musket men you might want as well.

I usually do not uprade them. I rather sacrifice them for the good cause :)
