We already have the ability to link military and support units, non-combat units etc. How about a new mechanic, to link military units. Any two units can be linked once the appropriate tech has been discovered (say a medieval). The first unit becomes the convoy leader. Only the leader can be moved, all other units are greyed out. The convoy has movement points equal to the slowest unit, and the leader determines the movement points used. All units follow the leader, like a convoy.
After each era, an additional unit can be added to the convoy, to a limit of 5. You can only have 2 convoys at a time, this is increased by 1 each era, to a max of 6.

Do you mean like moving in a chain or rudimentary formation? That's the sort of thing that they should add in as standard, no tech requirements. Not that it would be actually useful to a player, but if they put it in and had it working right, they could get the ai to use it. Just little things like having their ranged units behind their melee for protection could really up the ai's game.

It could work without the restrictions

If all units die when the convoy leader is killed (just like with other linked units), this sounds reasonable to me. You can move your troops easy and fast around in a vulnerable stack and when you want to fight, you spread the units on to the neighboring tiles and get going.
Good Idea

It would be either a chain of units all in separate hexes, or possible a stack in one hex.
