How can I turn on flexible difficulty mid-game?

Hey, I'm currently playing a huge snail game with ruthless AI on Monarch, but I find it a bit too uninteresting, as in 500BC I am already 100 points further than the best AI (which is ~200 points further than the second-best AI).

So, to make it a bit more challenging, is there a way to turn on flexible difficulty mid-game, or, failing that, is there a way to just change the difficulty level?

There will be in 1.73, I've already added it as on option in the BUG Panels (the ladybug icon).

You can do it the hard way in earlier versions; here's how. First, in your Civilization4.ini (found in your Documents/My Games/Beyond the Sword folder), set the value of cheatcodes to "chipotle". (Yes, the Firaxis dev's have a sense of humor...)

Then, load up your game and press SHIFT-~. It should open a console window. Make sure that is says "Python XXX" at the bottom. There are 2 console windows, but only 1 is the one you want.

Now, type gc.getGame().setOption(GameOptionTypes.GAMEOPTION_FLEXIBLE_DIFFICULTY, True) into the console, and press enter. Press SHIFT-~ to close the window again. Save your game. Turn cheatcodes off, and reload the save. If you check the victory screen, you will see that Flexible Difficulty is now enabled.

Yeah, it would be be because of that. The correct key for non-American keyboards is whatever key is left of the 1, I think. Not sure though.

Yeah, I tried pressing the left-of-1 key (which works for opening console in most games) and shift, but it did nothing :/ I don't suppose 1.73beta3 will be save-compatible with 1.73beta2?

Not a chance. ;)

Anyway, the only other key that might open the console is the '`' key. If that doesn't work, just try using SHIFT with random, non-letter keys. :mischief:

Yay, it worked! Thanks for the help! For some strange reason, the key I needed was 'ü' :S

Alright, now I'm gonna have to invade Greece, before the :):):):) starts hitting the fan. Which is gonna be hard, considering I have only 0.6 times their military power :crazyeye:

Is there a way to simply adjust the difficulty level mid-game?

Edit: Didn't realize this was in the RoM subforum. Is there a way that'll work in regular civ?
