How can you fire over mountains?

I forgot to get a screen shot, but I was being pestered by barbarians wandering around the edge of my borders. I was using my city to attack them as i moved forces around the mountain range to kill them before I realized that my city can somehow fire accurately over a mountain!

was that intended? because I thought that if you approached behind mountains then you were safe from attack temporarily. never tried to have archers fire over the mountain thought.

Im not sure if cities can automatically fire anywhere in their 2 hex radius, but i know some later units can fire at things they cant see as long as a unit on your team can see them.

I know there is an indirect fire promotion for units, but cities I don't know. I guess if it was visible and in the cities radius you can?

I believe cities can always fire at units within their two hex range, regardless of terrain. Archers can not shoot units they can't 'see.' I haven't played long enough with the late game ranged units to notice exactly how they work.

Its the "height" concept. Arty can fire over obstacles as long as the target is in your line of sight, while archer can only fire target in its own line of sight - no firing uphill. Correct me if Im wrong, I dont do much war at early game to be sure.

I think that the rule is that the target has to be in sight. A city always sees two tiles away so it supplies its own sight. In the case of the archer or later game units, another unit can provide a view of the target.

i did this the other day with an archer and said the same thing. it kinda defeats the realism aspect of it. then again if your an archer you should also have the experience to calculate your trajectory and angle over the mountain. i still think it's unrealistic though. if anything there should be an accuracy penalty which reduces damage or it can even completely miss and not do any damage at all.

Imagine this: im a commander of an arty battalion, my scouts are on the hill watching the target. I see no target, but my walkie-talkie helps me pin-point exactly where the enemy are, then .. boom!

What if Im a simple archer group commander? Completely blind if the hill s high enough. In this case, I d prefer save my group's arrows for the better chance

Its even easier imagining you are on the top tower of a castle ... nothing escapes your sight 2 hexes away!

Urmmm cant we all agree this is a game? I don't blame halo for having totally unrealistic sheild technology :p
