How close do you place your cities?

Edit: Also the AI will do their best to build little cities in between my land if I don't cover it all up. They don't even care if it is kind of like Lesotho, completely surround by me.

I HATE that. I've gone to war with the AI for sending a settler toward me to do that. (Free worker for me!) The AI seems to not understand that I don't appreciate having my trade routes broken (since there's no way to keep those trade route open, even with allies). Or they just like being jerks.
