I was flipping through Time Magazine and I saw an add for vanilla civ 3 that caught my eye. Then I went on the offical site and decided it sounded cool and bought it. Later I bought PTW and about the same time I discovered this site. Sice then the additicion has grown and I've gotten Conquests.

How about you?

I got my first PC 1992 and civ1 was one of the first games that fell into my hands.

My brother in law introduced me to this game like in july of 2002, then I bought PTW when it was released but I haven't bought C3C because I'm not addicted anymore.

I found out about CIV2 from a close friend he never played CIV2 but he was saying that I should get it because he knew I liked war games. So I thought sure why not I got nothing better to do and I needed a new war game.

ever since than I've been addicted :D

I lent that friend the game a few times and ironically he never got addicted

oh well I guess CIV isn't the game for everbody

Back at the ripe old age of 11, I believe, I was allowed to buy two computer games of my choice. So, I went to the store and picked out an Indiana Jones game and Civ 1. I liked the idea of building a civilization and defending it against enemies. Little did I know that I would still be talking about it more than a decade later...

I got Civ 3 illegally at first (I know, I am bad), but then I bought the real thing, PtW, AND C3C (Makes up for it, hopefully)

I heard about it through friends, and I really got interested in computer games ever since I got my new comp. like 8ish months ago.

My older brothers got the first one shortly after it came it out and I've been addicted to it since.

Some friends at uni were playing civ I. Ironically, we had our own little 'game of the month' - just trying to get the best score from the same start. Because I liked civ I so much, I got Civ 2 when it came out (after a friend confirmed it was better than civ 2).

I played that for a while, then stopped. When I 'found' it again, I found CFC at about the same time. At that point, Civ II was imminent. Now I don't play much Civ II at all... :(

As soon as I got my first computer, I went out looking for games at Frye's. Stolling down the Mac games aisle, there I spotted CivII. As soon as I gave the box the once over, I knew true love had already bloomed between us. And the price was $9.99.

...and they lived happily ever after!

I was introduced to the game in 8th grade by a friend who owned the first Civ and a copy of Sid Meier's Civilization, or Rome on 640k a day.

I haven't looked back since.

I guess it would have to be 1993. I was in the military at the time and a then smoker, on my way out ot have a smoke I'd stop in the computer shop as it was always air conditioned and it was pretty hot where I was stationed.

The guys in there were basically always goofing around and from time to time when the boss was out, they'd play civ. II <-- I think was at that time. I was allowed to play it for a couple of hours and remember getting in trouble because I was gone for so long :P

I finally bought CivIII for the PC a couple of years later and have enjoyed it immensely (and still do!). This forum is great for getting other ideas. All too often I sit there and think, hmm there isn't much new I want to try and I'm proven wrong hundreds of times over here. Thank you all!

My dad bought the original Civ in 1991, when I was a wee toddler. I attempted to play it, but really didn't have a clue what I was doing.

My dad then bought Civ 2 whenever it came out (96?), I was 8 or 9. I understood the game better, and really got addicted to it around the age of 10 or 11.

Then in 2001 I was out shopping, and saw it there lying on the shelf -- I had no idea they were releasing another. I didn't have enough money for it at the time, but I was back within a week, and bought it :D
I got PTW Last february, when I saw it on Amazon.co.uk, and when that didn't work very well, I went looking for help. I found CfC :)
Because of here, I knew when C3C was coming out, and promptly bought it :)

A room mate introduced me to civ2 in 1999, i've been hooked ever since.

This guy and I were talking about computer games at school one day (back in 2000). He was raving about Civ2, which he considered the best game ever. I was still playing SC3K and The Sims and had never played a Sid game. Anyway, I soon got Sid Meier's Civil War Collection and fell in love with the two games, which quickly displaced The Sims as my favorite. I had heard a LOT of stuff about how excellent Civ was, read a lot of reviews. I got Sid Meier's SimGolf, liked it. I figured if Civ3 was anywhere near as good as SMG, I'd love it-- so I bought it. :)

Summer of '92, I think, 15 years old. I was visiting my Aunt and cousin in Texas, and we had gone over to the house of one of her friend's for dinner. The husband, Jerry, who was a doctor, had this game on his computer that he just had to show me. Telling me tales of late nights and early mornings playing this game, he introduced me to the original Civilization. Later it was installed to my father's laptop, then my best friend's computer, then along came Civ II on my own computer. I'm up to C3C, and will continue to follow the series into the future.

Civ1 was a huge topic of conversation in the Gamers forum on CompuServe. This was also while Sid's Railroad Tycoon was a huge success and I was hooked on that real bad. That lead to actively reading both the Gamers and MicroProse forums on CIS.

Eventually the talk about Civ interested me enough that I got a copy--that was early 92. Loaded it up at the beginning of a 3 day break from work and ended up playing for just about 72 hours straight! Barely took breaks for food and sleep.

Oh, Civ2 and Civ3 didn't make the addiction any better!

My fifth grade teacher had Civ II installed on her computer in the classroom. I never actually played it there myself, but I distinctly remember watching others cheat and build nukes in the WWII scenario. It looked pretty cool, so I got Civ II Gold later, and I've been playing Civ ever since.

My mom had a friend at work who was addicted to civ3. He recomed that she buy Civ3 for me at christmas. It was a good surprise. HTe first week i ahd a hard timne...but through patience, i fell in love with this game.

I think its somewhat easier for those who are new to the game than for us old school Civ players. Its hard to break habits of playing certain ways, and each step forward brings the need to adapt your game playing style to complete concept changes and new features.

Saw an add for CivII back in the days, and figured I had money to burn and wanted something to play with on my parents new computer. So I bought it, and, well, got addicted in short order. My first game ever was as the Babylonians.

Bought CivIII, PTW, and C3C as soon as they hit the shelves home in Sweden. Bizarrely, the local games shop got in the Collector's Edition of CivIII at the same time as the normal ed, and prized the former ~5€ less, so I do have a flashily black box on the bookshelf, a CD stuffed with substandard advertising stuff, and a "Get Civilized" t-shirt I actually rather like.
