How do I change the rules to slow down the tech advancements?

Hi, can anyone help me? I would like to slow down the game speed of civ 2, the advancements are too quick, I would like to slow it down for both the AI and myself.

Does anyone know how I would alter the rules to do this and possibly slow down the year clock in the right hand corner of the screen?

Thanks. :)

Yup, and its very simple to do. First, open the Rules.txt file in your main Civ 2 folder. Near the top you should see a list, about half way down you will find a line that says 'tech paradgim'. Increasing the number will slow down the tech advances. I'm not sure how it works though, so you might have to experiment a bit until you find a good number. :)

Make a back-up copy of rules.txt before you change anything. Here is the line Darth refers to. If you change the 10 to 20 it will double research time.

10 ; Tech paradigm (higher # slows research)

I don't think you can change the year count this way, but you can change that (and the research speed) by making your game a scenario. My memory of this is fuzzy, but I think you open cheat mode and then editor, make any changes you want, and then "save as scenario". You may need a later edition of civ2 such as FW or MPGE to do this.

Changes to rules.txt affect every game you play (within that folder) but changes made in cheat mode only affect one game. Scenario mode has small by-products (no more 2/3 tech rule, etc).

Thanks guys I will give it a go! I assume, if memory serves that there is a year limit when the game ends automatically, am I right?

Yeah. The game ends in 2020, but you can play on. Your score stays the same as it was in 2020 though, IIRC.
