How do I find out what the computer is doing or has done?

For example, if I send one of my units near Little BigHorn, sometimes I see two of their units move very fast. It is so fast I can't tell what they are doing.

Sometimes they seem to be hitting one of my units, but nothing happens when they do. and then they move fast and sometimes disappear.

Where can I click to see an explanation of what has happened?

If they were attacking you, you would know it. There would be sounds and most likely some damage to your unit.

They will disappear once they go out of viewable range of your units. They may also seem to magically appear when they enter the seeing range of your unit.

Most likely the Comp just moved a unit, realized you were there and moved away.

Look at your game options screen and see if 'No pause after enemy moves' is checked. If it is checked, uncheck it. And look at 'show enemy moves'. Make sure that is checked. That should allow you a bit more of an opportunity to see what is going on.

The only way to know what they did is to see them do it.

BTW, sometimes they will use a diplomat against one of your cities and it will look like nothing happened to the city. What they most likely did was steal technology from you.

You will be told if they steal something from you. They seem to do other things at times, but I'm not sure exactly what.

However, as I'm not harmed, I've never really looked into it. I assume it is establishing an embassy or investigating the city.

You said to look at "show enemy moves." I can find the no pause after computer moves in Options, but I don't see anything that says "show enemy moves."

It has been my experience that if you don't have an embassy with the civ it doesn't tell you that they stole tech. I started checking this when I would have a comp Dip come up to my city and they would enter it. This resulted in me being able to declare war on them. I checked the city, nothing was different, so I saved and checked their techs (using cheat mode) then reload the turn before and checked techs. They had one more than before and not the one they were researching. It also happened in GOTM6 to me, but of course I couldn't check that one. I don't think the comp ever establishes an embassy or investigates the city as they already know everything about us anyway.

In my version (Multiplayer Gold, 5.4 26-March-99) 'Show enemy moves' is right above 'no pause after computer moves'. It is the fifth item down on my list.

File/Game Options. It should be right above "no pause"

Me neither. All I get is a "This act of Espionage by the %string1s gives us a valid pretext to declare war" message. I don't know what they did unless my city gets taken through revolution.

It says this when you are at peace with them and have no embassy with them.

That is exactly what happened to me when I started checking the results. And the only thing I saw was a tech was stolen.

I've also seen a diplomat "disappear" when attemtping something in my capital.

I was very worried at first but I realised I had city walls, so whatever he tried to do, it failed. However, since I had no embassy, it didnt tell me what failed.

Only once has a spy stationed in my city prevented espionage AND told me that that was why.

Most likely they also stole tech. Remember, when a Diplomat does something to a city, he disappears afterwards. He does stay alive like a spy can.

And you didn't get the 'able to decalre war' statement because you might have been at war him already.

I have never seen the comp establish an embassy, investigate a city, or poison the water supply.

Curse those evil blackguards !
I'm sure they poison water supplies and sabotage production without us knowing!
I say smite the blighters before they get near our cities (or at least send them "back from whence they came").

The other ones to watch are enemy (or worse, allied!) settlers that sneak in, disappear and then build a city in the most inconvenient of locales!

Well, this morning I played a long time and got to about 620bc before I saved the game.

During that time I was informed that "The Germans have built pyramid" and that "The Aztecs have built pyramid."

Why can't I view their civilizations? Where are they on this map that is mostly black? The only enemy I could see was Little Bighorn and Cedar Creek which I kept attacking just to see what would happen.

You have to explore the map to make it visible. It tells you about those other civ's because they are building wonders. Not until you establish an embassy with them will you get messages about most of the stuff they are doing.

You can also goto the 'Kingdom' menu and click on 'Find City', if an enemy city is listed there (it will say the city name followed by their tribe name) click on it. The game will show you where the city is even if you haven't explored it yet. Then you can have an idea of where to go to get there.

Duke, thanks for the help.

I went to Kingdom menu and find city. And among my civs was Germans. So I clicked and the map moved over a black area nearby. It didn't reveal what they looked like or what they were up to, though.

Have not tried to establish an embassy with them yet.

Thanks again.

You are correct. It will only show you where another civ city is on the map. Although some people may consider that a 'cheat', it can help you learn about the game for now.

If you can get over to them you will start to see them as well. To establish an embassy with them you have to move a diplomat unit into one of their cities.

How does the "find city" cheat work? I have never had cities that I haven't found in "Find city" list. Is this kind of a bug that I don't seem to have (or am I looking at the wrong time)?

The "find city" list will always include cities that have built wonders regardless of whether you have found them or not.
