I have been playing regent for about 3 months now... I have completed about 10 games with 8 of them me winning. the two I lost were 1) diplomatic loss to Inca in a 5 to 3 vote so that was not considered a loss in my mind
2) started off with horrible terrain and still managed to bulid the UN before anybody else, however i lost in the space race with 8 peices built to china completing them all. So outside of these tow losses, I have taken the regent level handily. I am thinking of moving up to the monarch level. I was wondering what u guys thought out there as to weather i should move up or not. I was also looking for any advice on the monarch level, as i know the AI gets some sort of boost on any level above Regent. Thanks in advance

The way I see it when you start to get bored playing a game of civ that's when you should move up a level.

As for difference between levels there really isn't that much of a difference between Monarch and Regent. You just have to be pickier on what wonder you build. And I think the AI get and extra worker or two, and a few warrior/spearmen.

Yes, move up to Monarch. The AI gets a small boost to everything (support, anarchy time, corruption, production). It's about time if you win 80 % of your games. The game gets boring otherwise.

I dont bulid wonders that are non essential to my success, in the early ages i shoot for the great library and masuleeom of masuless?? lol, by middle ages i try and build sun tzus art of war and smiths trading co. industrial ages i bulid theory of evolution, wall street and hoover dam. Finally in the modern times i build united nations and of course the manhattan project and attempt to build alpha centuri. is it even possible to get all these things on monarch as i was just barely beating my fastest competitors on regent to these wonders (Note: I was not a scientific civ, so i was not given the free tech.)

I would move up to monarch. The AI gets some bonuses that make it a little more difficult. The biggest difference I found was I needed to micro manage my workers more than I did on Regent. Once I started doing that I win on monarch regularly and will move to emporer soon. The only wonder I go straight for is The Great Library. Other wonders I like to have are Smiths Trading Co and the Hoover Dam. But as I play a domination game I usually capture my wonders.

Or just move up when you feel like it. If you struggle then you can always go back down a level and then try again another time.

What does this mean exactly.

On regent I used to simply automate my workers. On Monarch I don't automate my workers, instead making sure they are building mines, irrigating land etc where and when I want them them too. i.e. I manage what each individual worker is doing. If you are not sure what impact improving terrain can have on your game, I suggest you find an read some of the strategy threads on this site.

I suggest playing Joint Operations instead. Great game.

Or to try Emperor, this will be a challenge if you are used to Regent as you will have to change your early gameplay habits.

At Monarch level (the one I usually play since I do not want to think too hard due to an illness that makes thinking extra tough) you can usually get a few wonders in AA, more in MA and lots afterwards if you are killing the AI. Beeline for philosophy since the AI put absolutely no value on this. If you can work it so that you have both Mathematics and Iron Working when you get Philo first, then take Construction. Otherwise, I usually take Map Making (more costly than Lit and the AI puts no value on Lit either).

You can use the governors at Monarch level (although once in a while, you may need to override them). You need to micromanage your money sliders. Make sure that once you have only 2 turns until a tech that you check to see if increasing will give the tech in 1 turn or decreasing will still give it in 2.

Once you get the Great Library (assuming that you do), do not spend money on techs unless the AI is going pathetically slowly (which will happen occasionally).

If you would like to try a really fun scenario (epic game with only a few changes) try the attached file. In this, early ships must spend 3 mp to go into ocean. The scenario is 21 civilizations on a Large map. Landmark sea is Corral Reef which gives bonus to food, money and shields but costs 8 mp.

This is a really balanced scenario to learn Monarch level on.

thansk guys im playing on monarch as the persians, as i am best with them and the chinese. I just moved another civ (Spain off my continent so have a small continent to myself. I have sun tzus art of war as well as leonardos workshop and am working toward smiths trading company. War is happening alll around me and am currently 3rd in score behind netherlands and england. I am gonna keep using my military i hope its enough to destroy my counterparts. I already have 2 armies.
(If this is monarch i should be ready for emperor soon enough)

Find the difficulty that is right for YOU ;) . I prefer Monarch though I have
won at emperor and diety(Scenario) :D . Above monarch takes alot of the
fun away for me :( , I don't like to research a tech, check the AIs and they
have a 5 or 6 tech lead  . Although I can sooner or later catch up, it
takes too much time, thinking, micromanagement and energy to win---I have
found that Monarch is the MOST fun for ME ;)
