I know the keyboard key L is to load a unit on to a boat, but other wise I am lost. I have tried clicking on the unit I want to load and press L when both that unit and the boat are in my city, but nothing seems to be happening...

Any help for a new player?

Thanks

Park the boat at shore, then walk the unit onto it as if you were moving it on land.

click the unit and there would be a "load" button in the bottom.

Also note that boats have different capacities and that not all boats can load any unit. A caravel for instance can't load a settler (which I learned the hard way). Just look at the icons at the bottom of the screen; it should have an icon with a plank leading onto a ship if you are able to load this unit onto a boat. If you have several boats in your city you will be given a choice as to which one you wish to load your unit on.

Why cant you load a settler on a caravel?

Ask Sid Meier.

Seriously, though, caravels were historically small vessels used for exploration across the seas. Thusly, you can load explorers and the like onto them.
