How do I maintain a good reputation?

I often have a hard time maintaining a Spotless or Honourable reputation. What are the things you can do to maintain a good reputation or improve my reputation when it's bad? What are the things that would affect reputation negatively? Some are obvious like betraying an ally and attacking him/her unexpectedly, breaking alliances. However, what about when I agree to A's request to wage war at B which I'm at peace with? Since I'm acting on another civ's request, the effect should be minimal right? Any other advices?

Also, it's so hard to please other civs or get them to do something for you. I give money, I agree to give advances, I agree to peace, etc, but when I ask for some technology or ask to exchange technology, I get refused. The only success I've had is asking some civilization much smaller than me to pay tribute.

Sometimes nothing might happen. Once, i broke a treaty by attacking a civ, but my reputation was still spotless. And before, when another civ asked me to declare war against a friendly civ, and I did, still nothing happened to my reputation. Then, when my troops were in the other civ's city area, and they asked me to leave, and I said "no! we renounce this worthless treaty!". Suddenly, my reputation went down from spotless to dishonourable! Then I broke another treaty, and it because atrocious. So what I'm saying is it might be random.

the way Ive found that works best is to just keep the other civs

at you and then they will usualy break the treatys first!

The way I get them to declare war without damaging your rep. is to demand tribute. If you do it enough, they will say "We can no longer tolerate your wild accovations. You shall taste our steel. Prepare for WAR!"
