I usually play on regent level, but near the 2nd age i always run up an enormous debt and the AI starts to take a huge lead in just about every area...what can i do to increase income???

Make sure you build marketplaces, banks, etc... I am assuming you build roads on the tiles your civillians are working?

And you might wanna try get some wonders like smiths trading corporation (name?) that has free maintenance for trade buildings.

Also try using democracy or if you have a huge army try monarchy or communism.

Edit: try reducing research and luxury sliders.

What government are you using? The best way to ensure a healthy supply of cash is to be in a Republic with all of your cities heavily developed with roads. If you need to, cut back on research and build up your treasury, since you can buy your technologies from other civilizations and then trade them around for cash and profit. You'll get a tech lead later on. And as bladester mentions, build those trade improvements to get the cash flowing and the people happy. You can even support a very large army if your surplus is enough...

1st let me welcome all 3 of you as you are new here.

BUILD ROADS ON ALL USED TILES.

THis is the only way to make serious money.

for more questions that are similiar to this but a little more simplistic (less strategy oriented) questions, see this 'newbie thread.' people answer pretty quickly, and if somone gives wrong info, someone else will correct him. http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=44175

if ther is any tiles remaiing, no matter how rubbish the location, build more cities there. if you can get these to add a few extra gold and in monarchy it adds to how much units you can haave. and in democracy for ower corruption, but you could end up losing mor emoney if you have a big army.
we kinda need more info to give you more exact tips.

Also, don't build too many military units. Your internal cities really only need 1 defensive unit in them. Maybe two in the outer cities. I generally have about 2.5 units per city, including workers.

I'm running into the same problem. Whatever I do my money just cant seem to compete with the enemy.

They seem to be able to pull off feats of production beyond anything you are capable of! Instantly gaining Musketmen for instance or building Leonardo's Workshop in less time than me despite my building it for 20 turns before anyone else and in a bigger city even though they have never been to war (so are unable to have leaders to hurry).

Endless Knights appearing even though the enemy always has zero in his treasury and so on...

Its annoying! I'm playing on Warlord yet enemy civs seem to be able to very easily keep up in tech with half the cities I have!

Grrrrr

Greyhawk, sounds like you need to mine more to get more production.

Chiclet man and Greyhawk, are both of you familiar with how the city-screen works and what those symbols of production, food and commerce mean and where they come from? A very important thing is to mine and build roads everywhere, except in some caes when you want to build roads and irrigate.
