How do we know this is pre-alpha?

Experience being a bug tester in other games. Its still a good guess, but still a guess in the end.

I hope they don't repeat Civ 5 and give us a beta game at release. They've got 4 months to take this from pre-alpha to a finished build.

"Pre-alpha" sounds completely ridiculous for me because I have once begun my job as a beta tester of a big strategy game 4 months before its release and back then it was "advanced beta" :shifty:

What you see doesn't represent the finished product and chances are it doesn't actually represent the the most current version in the development cycle. It would be more accurate to call it a Press Build. It's a mostly stable version with limited features designed to be shown off.

Ok this makes the most sense to me. I don't have any experience in this area and I get that it's ultimately subjective. But I was slightly alarmed, as a layperson even, that we would be in "pre-alpha" with 4 months left to go... (Actually, I was a computer science major, but now I'm a lawyer, b/c I sucked at computer science :P )

I wouldn't worry about it.

Even so, we live in an age of patches, even if its' "beta" at release, I don't see it as being such a huge issue when they can roll out a patch almost every week if they choose to.

Genuine question - I've noticed some people say this is a pre-alpha build. How do we know that?

People are just guessing.:)

What difference would/could it possibly make? A word is word, devoid of meaning. If this is an alpha or a beta, or anything else you care to call it (other than release version). It's kind of like the oven theory:

There are only two states an oven can exist in : heated, or un-heated. Pre-heating is nonsensical and very poor English. In the same vein, there are only two states this game exists in : Released, or not. Semantics make no difference.

No idea why people are even throwing these words around.

It's a version that still has 4 months to be completed, maybe a bit longer depending on when they decided to package the footage.

Isn't that all the information you need?

It is nothing of the kind. To "pre-heat" means "to heat ahead of time". In other words, to make it heated before you put the food in.

No. The prefix pre means before. Pre-heat literally means "to make hot before hot". Just like you stated, you need other words to describe the action you are implying. Just because a lot of people accept it as proper, does not make it so. Try to pay attention to the language we have all agreed upon.

I love the Latin, it's pre game atm. Omega is soon to come though. ;)

Conjugate the verbs if you must. :P

Did you know the Greek number omega has a literal value of 800, but I think this thread is descending into far less than that value.

No offense but the OP asked a question, and that question was fair, let's not get bogged down in semantics. Answering the OP Is not a sin.

It's pre alpha and in beta atm AFAIK, which means it's being beta tested by various people both professional and not. Although it's a little difficult to say because alpha testing has a lot of meanings now. It can mean that the game is soon to be released, and it can mean there are people who were beta testers professionals and/or programmers who are rounding it off. But it tends to mean a lot of things.

When it is in alpha (whatever that means) phase I am sure they will let us known though.

These days you can play in alpha if you pay money, in various games, so we have no idea what it means any more. Alpha should be before beta or after beta, or who knows, but it is an odd concept now...
