Revolution is almost impossible to be no matter how hard I try. One time the king had 99 regulars about 50-60 dragoons, 34 artility, and 54 warships. Maybe I should play the easier levels.

If you haven't installed the patch that is one solution. It provides for an easier game at the lower difficulty levels because the REF does not build up as fast.

However I have beaten a 926 strong REF on the top level so it is possible.

Another way that I have found - and this works really, really well for me - is to build as strong a navy as you possibly can. I am talking 30+ Ships Of The Line here, in addition to Frigates (although these are simply not as effective).
Set them to Sentry duty between your main colony & the shipping lanes to Europe.
You will not want to be further than 2 or 3 squares off the cost in any direction.
Then, when the REF arrives, you can sink their Galleons & Man O' Wars before they can land the troops. Kill the REF Navy, and the King surrenders. You'll lose 1 or 2 in 3 of your Ships Of The Line, as it takes 2 or 3 to kill a Man O War, but it works.

Hi! I'm new here. Mywife is a huge Civ IV fan and told me I should try this forum so here I am.

I just bought the game. I use to play to old version from 1994 all the time and I was pretty good at it. But this one, I played three game at the easiest level and I get the crap kicked out of me each time revolution starts. A few pointers would be great here. I am willing to try the ship stategy but aside from that, any other ideads?

You know, when you play Civilisation at the easiest level, it is so easy that it's almost boring. But this one, the easiest level is impossible to win so I don't even want to imagine the rest.

Last game, I used a scout to explore all ruins, I got lots of treasure, brought them back with a galleon, bought tons of soldiers and concentrated my colonies with fisherman and farmer to build food so it would grown, put carpenters and lumberjacks to build stuff as fast as possible and then convert all primary ressources (sugar, tobacco, fur, cotton) into manufactured good to get more money. I thought my strategy was pretty good, but whern I declared revolution with 50 turns left, I lost badly.

Also, how many turns do you need to defeat the King. In other words, with how many turns max should I declare independance?

Thanks

Welcome to the forum.

Your strategy sounds fine. The only major change I would suggest is that you use dragoons instead of soldiers. Attack the King's forces as soon as they land and don't leave any to assault your colonies.

If you install the patch you will have 100 turns to win the revolutionary war no matter when you declare.

This is an extended strategy article on winning at Revolutionary level but most of the tips apply at any level:

A few more ideas:
1) fortify soldiers in hills, woods or wooded hills on the coast next to your cities. The defense bonuses mean the REF will lose more attacking units taking you out.
2) build lots of warships, and cluster them around your coastal cities. They should be able to take out some of the king's ships before they are able to land their units.
3) Next game, don't build very many coastal cities - 2 or 3 should be plenty. It'll be easier to defend if there are fewer coastal cities.
4) Fortify at least 5-6 soldiers in each coastal city. More if you can.
5) build loads of canons. They aren't very strong, but they are cheap.

hey: im half way through a game, and i put my first city on the coast, and my second city on a hill (not on the coast) but closer to the Sail to Europe part of the map.. . I did this because i hoped that the REF would deploy their troops at first sight of land and walk towards the nearest city, does this happen? and also, if u build ur cities on the west coast (when u start off on the east coast) does the REF come from the east coast, and sail all the way around, or does it come from the west coast? (this was from northwest passage scenario)

I would expect the initial landings to be alongside your port, but later in the war you can expect troops to land anywhere there is a colony within one tile of the coast.

The only time I set up my colonies on the West Coast the REF landed on the East Coast and walked across - it took them ages. That was on the Western Hemisphere map. However they did send some ships round the NW passage and scared the hell out of me because all my troops were halfway across the continent. Fortunately they had already disembarked their men and could only bombard my ports.

I won 2 games now on the middle difficulty. But it was very easy so I suppose it would work even on governer level:
Be as quick as you can with the independence declaring.
Do not build any war navy untill you can do anything of worth (I only use them for fun whem I'm sure I'm winning).
Choose the leaders providing you fortification and settlement defence bonuses.
Choose the leaders providing you faster conversation from missions and stronger converts.
Choose the leaders providing you faster generals and any military bonuses.
Choose the right to bear arms in your constitution (+1 for colonist).
Build enough weapons and just little horses.
Just before declaring independence buy two or three galleons full of weapons and horses in Europe.
Fortify couple of skilled soldiers in the cities which you expect to be attacted. These cities shall be big (many colonists in).
Fortify converts (without any weapons) as well. They are quite strong if you boost them with bonuses.
Let one town be occupied -> The king keeps a lot of forces there and your other settlements are saver.

And now the point!:
Your city is being besieged. Find on which field are opponents cannons and mounted units. Than mount ONE soldier and attack that field. If you survive, DEMOUNT the unit. A soldier is a much better defender than a cavalry. After that you can equip another sodier with the same horses!
Try to destroy as many artilery and horses as possible. They are weak defenders but strong attackers.
When getting a level, choose minuteman (better settlement defense).
If your defenders are too much injured, switch them with those working inside the settlement.
Build cannons, they are quite cheap and there is nothing more useful to build.
When you notice, you are getting stronger than the RMF, start attacking.

teach colonists to be veteran soldiers in school, buy veteran soldiers overseas and put them on horses to make dragoons. Stock up things like guns and horses in wagons. Arming guys alarms the king more than having trained but unarmed soldiers. Arm everyone right around when you declare independence and you will have a better chance of victory. And don't worry too much about your economy once the war starts, as it's all about this final fight. Pull everyone out of the fields and abandon a city that is likely to fall, and even unarmed farmers on simlpy fortified defense behind a wall may suck but they don't *totally* suck in defense. Do buy a few cannons, and before the war have some fights with either another power or some natives in order to skill up some of your troops (like the French and Indian war gave the colonials some experience).

Thanx for the advice. Filling the wagons with guns and horses does really not alarm the King like having those in settlements, great! :)

Quick question: how do you get enough LBP if you have a lot of colonists defending your cities, do you just declare independence THEN make the soldiers?
