How do you select aircraft?

Sorry for the stupid question. I’ve been searching for some time now and haven’t found the answer. In Civ 5, if an aircraft is the only unit type in a city, how do you select it to give it orders? The unit icon is not appearing above the city.

In cities, there is usually a unit banner just above the upper right of the city name, otherwise, at the top of the city name there is a small box with numbers in it (the number of air units available in the city). On a Carrier, you get the little box with the numbers in it beside the Carrier unit banner. Select the unit banner to give the aircraft orders panel or the numbered box to select the individual aircraft to give it orders.
