how do you upgrade units?

how do you upgrade units? I've looked everywere but I can't find instructions. this is the 5th day iv'e owned the game. please awnser, I want to go to war put I have a lot of outdated units, like warriors and I'm almost in the industrail ages.

First of all, you must move whatever unit you want to upgrade into a city that has a barracks. Once the unit is in such a city, you can press 'U' when that unit is selected to upgrade just that unit. Pressing 'Shift-U' will allow you to upgrade every unit of that type currently in a city with barracks.

Oh, and make sure you have the resources necessary to build the unit to which you are upgrading.

Also you have to have enough money and any required technologies to complete the upgrade(s). Sounds like the techs won't be a problem.

The city with barracks also have to be connected to the resource in question, right?

It's not always worth it though. Correct me if I'm wrong, but upgrading a pikement to musketman costs 60 gold, which is the prise of the musketman itself. Better to disband it in a corrupt city or in the unitproduction city.

The cost of upgrading went up in Conquests, I believe. In Vanilla and PTW it was cheap enough that some people thought of it as a near-exploit since the AI didn't upgrade much.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe in Conquest the costs for upgrade are 3 times the shield difference and in Vanilla/ PTW 2 times the shield difference.
