How does the AI get such a massive population?

I am somewhat new to GC 2 and have only been playing it (the Ultimate edition with both add-on packs by the way) for a few days, but one thing I have noticed is that (I am playing on normal by the way) is that no matter what I do the AI players like the Terrans almost always end up with a massive population shortly after the game has started compared to my own, even though I am using a custom race that has a 40% population increase bonus!

How does the AI get its population up so quickly? They can't possibly research farms or things like that in such a short amount of time!

Population growth gets a bonus on each planet that has 100% approval rating (as of 76% approval there's already a bonus but it's smaller than at 100%)

Also note that population on colony ships is not taken into account for the statistics, so if you've got a lot of inhabitants in transit it may look like your population is lower than the AI's, until your colony ships land.

I don't remember whether there is any impact from having for example 2 billion people on 1 planet versus 1 billion on each of 2 planets (assuming the approval ratings would be identical), that may or may not have an impact on population growth.

Interesting. I always see these huge pop. numbers with the Torians. They have the Super Breeder ability, not to mention their own tech tree allows them to colonize all types of planets quicker than anyone else. They are always massive in every game.

h_g: If you haven't already, download the high resolution mod. I'm still somewhat new to GC2 myself and just found out about it a bit ago.

Could you give me a link to it? Also, if I install it will it prevent me for continuing my current saved game?

My virus protection program goes nuts and gets rid of the file, and after doing a little googling it appears that others have reported the same thing and that there appears to be an adware virus in the mod.

Let me guess, you're using AVG? Don' worry. It's a known false positive. It works just fine. :)

No, I am not using AVG. And I heard someone else say that the reason was that there is an adware program of some sort inside one of the mod folders.

Not true.

Well, it doesn't really matter now anyways. I just read it on some forum that the mod for some reason doesn't work with the ultimate version of gal civ (its basically gal civ 2 with both add-on packs).

Also, since you appear to be the only other guy on this forum could you also be so kind to reply to the other thread I made about Terror stars? :)

I have the Ultimate version and it works fine for me. As long as it's in the Mod folder in your base GC2 directory and you have it selected in your options it will work.

ARRRGGHH!!!!! :aargh:

I can't use this mod, because whenever I finish downloading it my virus protection programs just automatically delete it at once. Even if its actually turned off.

I guess I will just have to play without the fancy visuals. :(

Just wanted to say that I use the high res mod too with the ultimate version and it works great! My AV is AVG and have never heard anything about spyware or adware in this mod, but I don't think that can be true considering the number of people that have downloaded and installed it. False-positives are very common with these kinds of things.

You can always get your AV program to exclude or ignore the mod download so that it won't automatically delete it.
