How I resolved my CTD's - extreme measures

Hello

My PC:
Windows XP with SP2
AMD XP Mobile 2.6 @ 12x200
1GB Corsair memory @ 6.2.2.2
ATI 9800pro @ Stock Timings - 5.10 Cat drivers
DFI Lanparty Ultra board - NForce 2 Chipset - N-Force Remix 2.51 drivers.

The game would randomly CTD or reboot the machine following a BSOD, even with auto reboot turned off under XP.

Tried...
Reduced overclocking to default settings, reducing memory timings, replaced ATI card with a NVidia one. Tried various drivers for the graphics cards. Reduced hardware acceleration for the sound, reduced AGP from 8x all the way down. Still I would get a random CTD or reboot.

My Resolve...

Made a copy of my XP disc to install with the minimum of processes running. Installed XP on a second hard drive, primary partition. Installed my motherboard (remix 2.51) and graphics card drivers (ATI 9800pro with Cat 5.10) and nothing else.

With the above XP boots up to around 100mb footprint. I even selected the classic look for the desktop.
I put my CPU back to its overclocked setting.

Then I installed Civ4 and set it to...
1280x1024 @ 2x AA, with all the animation on etc etc etc.

Now the game plays absolutely fine, I have played with zero CTD's or reboots on a terra map, large world and the date is past 1800AD with no slow downs felt, hopefully it will continue that way. I have used the Earth view and opened up the city view etc etc etc - things that would have previously caused a reboot and there hasn't been a problem.

So then I booted to my std XP install and edited the boot.ini so I would get a boot menu when I first turn the PC on with the choice to boot up to either version of XP, my std one or the 'stripped' down one to play Civ 4.

Whilst the above might be a little extreme, and shouldn't need to be done as every other game that I have got play with zero problems, desperate times call for desperate measures. And until a patch is released that can resolve those issues I know that I can at least enjoy playing the game.

Just maybe the above type of system might have been typical of those used to test the game with whilst in production, rather than the type of configuration that many people need to use..?
