How [I think?] I solved my MAF problems....

OK, first a few disclaimers....

1. I think I was getting MAF failures. I'm not quite sure the failures I was getting were MAFs, but it certainly stopped gameplay, and was involved with disk access. My symptom was the Windows error report: ("Civ4Warlords has caused an error and must be closed.")
2. My machine is XP Pro sp2 fully security patches, clean install on new machine, 2G memory, Radeon 9600 without Catalyst. 3.0 CPU, etc.
3. This is my clean "gaming" disk with no anti-virus, etc. (I have slide out disk caddies and separate my gaming from my work, etc.) The Norton AV on my main disk just fights with everything. The gaming disk is NOT for internet access!
4. Huge Terra map, 17 AI civs plus me, Prince level, up to turn 490 on FX-Long game speed (1250 total turns).
5. Save files are up to 14K plus 1,023kb in the NCSaver.
6. Every time I tried to reach Trudeau in the Diplomacy screen the program crashed. I could do other tasks and diplo with other civs, but I could not talk to Trudeau. Have they coded personality clashes into ViSa? COOL!!!!

So being an old Windoze coder, I actually sent the error report to MS, and got sent to the following link:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=884070

which discussed storage errors, and gave instructions to look for 1005 errors in the application event log. And there they were, pointing to troubles loading ViSa_v3\Assets\LeaderHeads.FPK. Hhhhmmmm..

The KB suggested CHKDSK, but on a hunch I re-installed the ViSa ModPack 3 with the Repair option. And voila! Now I get my diplo with Trudeau. BEG FOR MERCY, you useless CANADIAN drongo, beg for my magnanimous Korean mercy!!!!!

Sooo.......

If you're getting MAFs, try....
1. check your Windows application event log for 1005 errors, see what file is hurting
2. See if a ViSa 3 repair re-install helps
3. Failing that, try a CHKDSK
4. If possible, use an isolated "gaming" disk. Civ4 is a real resource pig, try to keep that disk clean and lean. Try VMware if disk caddies are not suitable. Really REALLY limit what is loaded onto the Civ4 disk.

Last disclaimer, I've only played a few turns since the repair without incident, so no guarantees that this doesn't happen again later in this game. I'll report back once I've converted the globe to my glorious Korean culture!

/* EDIT: I also quit to desktop when I need to load a saved game or create a new game. This lets Windows release the memory leaked by the Civ4Warlords.exe Wait until the Windows Task Manager shows low CPU usage so you know it's all cleaned out. */
cheers and THANKS FOR A SUPER GREAT MOD!!!!!!

MAF's say "Memory Allocation Failure".
Your problem was a bad install, has nothing to do with MAF.
Next time you could post in the appropriate thread instead of starting a new one...

Yeah, later on I saw the symptoms for what the MAF looks like, so my issue was not a MAF. Sorry about that. I was just so excited to be playing again!

"Next time you could post in the appropriate thread instead of starting a new one..."

It's not quite clear what thread to put what post in. I debated using the bug thread, but in this case it was more of a solution (that worked for me) rather than reporting a bug. So my hope was that other people that had a similar crash could apply the same fix.

cheers

This would have went in the General Discussion or Bug Thread perfectly :)

Glad you got things working....and yes we do have some bugs, specifically with the Unit Statistics mod still, boy has that been a bug fest...
