How long does a game take?

One of the things I liked reading the run-up to Civ 4 release was the game developers saying they concentrated on making the game take less time to play. But aft finishing my first game, it seems to take just as much time as always. My first game was a culture victory on a small map around 1980AD, took about 12 hours of play time. And that's with basically no military action, no combat unit management!

How long do your games take? Is there some way to play through a game faster? I like the game and all, but 12 hours is a long time for me.

My games usually take about 4 - 5 hours.
You can try the "Quick time" setting. I personally don't like it but it certainly makes the game fly by.
Or you could just get used to saving the game after two or three hours and resume it later. I know its hard :)

Put it on quick mode to make it go faster. I usually play at normal speed/standard size maps at at first it was taking me 10 or so hours but now I have it down to 5-8 hours depending on how the game goes.

I finished an Epic game last night -- well, this morning really -- that took 9 hours! Not very epic at all. But I was stuck alone on a small continent and didn't see too much action neither in the early nor the late game.

i usually play with 10-15 civs, so mine tend to last 1 1/2 hrs., but on games with 2-4 civs, it can be 5-10 hrs. (i always play on epic)

I play eighteen civ duel sized pangaea's on quick and noble (can't get enough of them [in fact every game except for one I have ever played has been on a duel-sized map even though my three month old Toshiba Qosimo laptop could handle a billion times more])and surprisingly it only takes me 4-5 hours. I one time finished a settler conquest victory on a high sea duel sized pangaea against one civ in thirty minutes:D (Could of been fifteen but I wanted some wonders to to bump my score and took a few breaks to get chips or go to the bathroom.) Oddly, enough my longest game so far was an eighteen civ duel sized pangaea game with high seas on noble with always war and one city(I won but just barely [used my last fully healed infantry against Russia's last really beaten up cultureless mech infantry and won:D]).

I like playing games that take me as long as possible. I just think its funner when there are more wars exceed, more nukes to fire, and more people to backstab
(grin)

i usually do normal speed and if its a war heavy game 5 to 6 hours and only because i rush at the end for mass media and get the diplomatic win on noble.
