Hey everyone, new here and i'm wondering exactly how many barracks ya'll build? I play on Huge maps at Emperor level and i never quite know how many to build. I usually build them in my "core" cities, like my capital and big production cities, and if i can afford it my border cities.

So is that pretty much what you guys do, or do you build them in almost all your cities? Or do you only build a couple? Also, about upgrading units, do you just shuttle your non-barracked defenders to barracks cities to be upgraded or do you build the new upgraded units and just disband the old defenders in cities lacking barracks?

Thanks for the input. :)

Any city that could possibly end up producing units gets them, as well as cities on my border.

I always build a barracks in any city that will be producing military units. If it can build a unit in a decent time, then it gets a barracks.

Barracks are built only in cities designated for building military units in the early game.

In the early to mid game where a greaty deal of WAR! happens, additional barracks gets rushbuilt in selective cities far from capital, on the front line - essential R&R for the troops.

After the advent of Steam Power I never build another barracks, in fact I sell off all but 1 on each landmass.

On a huge map I will probably build..

2 by 1000BC
5-6 by 10AD
15 by 1000AD witrh suntrzu's, world conquered.
30 or so without suntzu's

Barracks are mandatory for my cities except for the most unproductive. Like those tundra outposts that are simply there to claim resources.

None, if I can get away with it.

I never aim for veteran units, and subsequently have few heroes. The barracks are sometimes built for upgrading units; but then one can be shared between many cities.

However, I do build The Art of War if given half a chance :p

Art of war is key, but if I don't get it, i build em everywhere pretty much.

The number of barracks I have at any given time is less than or equal to N where N is the total population of my Civ divided by the average number of citizens in a city.

I usually have atleast 2-5 in my core, and a few on the front so that injured units can heal quicker.

My recent tactics have heavily involved building early barracks in my non settler factory cities so that they can produce veteran spearmen rather than regulars so they have more chance of successfully defending and allows me to quickly build a decent attacking force.

My goal is not to build any non-veteran units except for the first scouting warrior.

Basically its the first building in every city with the exceptions of:
-settler factories
-unproductive cities conquered too late in the game to make them usefull.
-emergency cases where i MUST build units very early before havingraxes.

Since i play only the highest difficulties, (done deity, now trying sid) i have no chance for sun tsu's.

I have a small order of buildings when i found a city:
1.Temple/Library
2.Barracks
3.Random

Veteran units are imo very useful.

All new cities that I build or capture after my initial build phase get a barracks as a top priority. As Dell19 mentioned, having less regular units means more meaningful promotions and better defense.

An interesting thing I've noticed is that i you don't prioritise barracks then an early war is much harder especially if you are planning to build libraries as they tend to take a long time to build if you are building them before a barracks.

I build them if I don't need anything else desperately, and the city will produce a unit next.

It depends what civ i'm playing as...With Greece now i'm making a mint by forging ahead with Science and selling techs to other civs, so i'm everyone's best buddy and i don't really need many barracks.

I do exactly what you do Uncle Sam. Core cities which build military units, sell 'em if I don't need them for a while (building factory for example)
And the frontline ofcourse.

Veterans are always needed. Don't ever be caught unawares!
