lets break it down. how many defensive and how many offensive? how many bombardment? aircraft?

give answers for during war and peace time.

i've been building lots of artillery, 10 per city around the edge of my civ, and 5-10 defensive units depend on who my neighbors are and how agressive they tend to be. my offensive units tend to resemble stacks of death, 25 plus for each stack and i sometimes keep them right outside my cities so i can right click on the whole stack and get em moving more quickly.

as for aircraft i dont have too many but i put em in cities that are the furthest out or in cities that are separated from my main civ. when i do build em i try to have at least 10 in far away cities.

this is a general amount i have war or peace time, but if i have a city really being fought for i'll throw a bunch more defensive units and bombardment units in that city, i try to make sure i have extras in case a city needs reenforcements.

usually i just build infantry or MI, tanks or MA and artillery or radar artillery. sometimes i build TOW's and mobile sams for outer defenses around my civ boltered by MI and MA.

I tend not to build any defence. At the start of the AA I build only warriors. You get 2 for the price of 1 spear.

1 MP depending on my gov. but in republic a lot of cities are empty. I tend to move my offence to the side I plan to attack. I will leave 2 to 3 offence in boarder towns.

After railroads only boarder towns have any units.

As far as bombardment weapons, a lot of factors come in to play. Are you a head in tech? Are you larger or smaller? So some game it will be 0, some 25+.

I play warmonger a lot. Some games my first warrior will kill or capiture the first thing it finds. If things look bad the AI will most of the time make peace fast in the early game (if they only have 1 city you can count on it 90% of the time).

Remember a good offence is the best deffence. And if the AI can't get to your cities they can't take them.

I usually build about 2 units per city in the late game. The rest are in a defensive pool that can be quickly moved wherever needed.

I will answer the same question once more.

Do not station any defence in your cities except for maybe 1 unit in a few of your border cities that are at severe risk.

Other than that, use a fast interception force to take down attackers.
With this force you also have the option to attack and when defending, a lower number of units can cover a large area.
It's just a lot more versatile.

In most cases, 100% fast attackers (horse-knight-cav-tank) is the best force to have. Exceptions are swordsmen when you have money to upgrade them from warriors and in case things are going so difficult that you cannot afford to lose any units (usually on sid and sometimes deity) Then use about 60% bombardment, 20% defensive and 20% offensive in large stacks.

In AA only a few worriors. Build these at moments you have nothing better to build. usually these are new cities with 2 production where i would like to build a worker but first need to make a warrior to wait for the population.
These warriors are used to reduce the amount of demands you get from the AI a bit, reduce the chance they will backstab empty cities (move a warrior in a city when AI units get near, of course be sure to have roads for moving the warriors) and for mp in the biggest cities.
Not many warriors before barracks though. (after barracks you can choose to build a bunch if you want to upgrade them to swords)
depending on the difficulty, the amount of regular warriors for me varies from about 0(chieftain/regent or whatever they are called) to say 4-5 on emperor and maybe up to 10 on sid (although sid is better played on archipel where you will need much less of them)

When railroad is around, try to have the front where you are fighting connected to your home empire. This allows you to defend with your attack force if needed.

1 MI per city except for border cities which i stack up to 20 in each city with piles of 50 radar artillery.

i build warriors at first, they're faster to build than a spearman, but, if i have a city that can do either in one turn or the same number of turns, i'm going for the spearman.

i do build a warrior in new cities just to have a unit, then i build a worker then a spearman, but usually i send a spearman WITH the settler unit (so i dont waste time in building a unit) so i dont have to worry about building anything other than a worker an extra spearman or two and then i get to work on building improvements. i dont build improvements until after discovering the republic and change governments.

i start with my capital and build a warrior, another warrior and then a settler, then a warrior, then a settler, and i keep doing this until i get bronze making then i make spearman (if i can build on in the same number of turns as a warrior, if not, just warriors) then i found a new city then build a worker (if i sent a unit with the settler) and then a couple more warriors or spearman.

then for the next couple of eras, i keep five defensive units in each city, since roads can be slow and my infrastructure is still being built, so that way IF i have to send extra units to a city, i have a couple rounds before they REALLY need to be there, giving them time to get there. i usually dont build catapults though. in fact i dont built such units until i can build cannons and then i start making those endlessly.

Frankly, I find ThePrankMonkey's advice to be unfeasible, at least on higher difficultylevels. My advice is follow Wacken's advice, at least on this matter.
