How often do you build a new city? I'm wondering how often is too often....etc...I usually will have 5 to 7 citys built w/i the first 1 to 1 1/2 hours of playing but I want to know what the pros have....

Something like 10-20 in first hour usually.

Its always been my feeling that you need to keep building them asap until there is no room left. But now in the back of my mind I am thinking of a plan to build just 3,4, or 5 cities and then build a strike force capable of taking over more land by force. This is because when I try and play demi-god or diety you sometimes only have time to build that many cities before the map is full.

I like to expand as quickly as possible. When I played at lower difficulty levels I usually ran out of room around 15-20 cities. The AIs are much quicker at emperor or above so I only have time for 5-10 cities, and then I have to fight it out. Later in the game I often found new cities on the ashes of old ones that the other civs raze when fighting amongst themselves.

As many as I possibly can...

As fast as I can. That can range from once every twenty turns to once every two turns.

As fast as I can. Typically I have about thirty cities after the first 150 turns.

Getting a number of cities within a number of hours isn't a valid measure, since people focus more on different things. i.e., I might spend the first 2 hours looking over my first 20 turns on a demi-god/deity level game. Whereas, if I play a regent or lower game just for a relaxing game, I can spend 2 hours playing 200 turns, since I know what I'm doing, and the AI doesn't have as great as an advantage.

You can't compare settlers per hour, you can compare settlers per turn though. Not everyone plays at the same pace (I don't spend 2 hours for 20 turns :p), though the beginning is by far the most important. Maximizing growth and production in your cities should be key, instead of whizzing through the game. I usually get my second city in the ~2000 BC range.

I hate the begining phase, it's not fun :P. It's very important, and is what makes the later parts of the game more fun.

Anyway, early on, I make about a settler per turn once I get going.

I don't spend a lot of time per turn myself, unless I have to do a fair amount of micromanagement. I actually like the early game myself; I enjoy the challenge expanding as fast as I can while still managing individual cities for maximum benefit.

I usually have 6-10 cities built before A.D. starts and between 15-20 at the end of expansion. I guess that would be about every 250-400 years before A.D. and about every 50-80 years after A.D.

well not nessecarily since to a country a good leader is immortal and will last forever and a bad leader just wont go away. but im just immortal and stink as a leader since my people arent always happy but produce alot and are wealthy. help me to take my country to new heights and across the globe.

it depends. in the game i am playing, i only built 4 cities and all the other cities i have now are orignally other civ's cities. but in previous games i ever built more than 60 cities.

How is that relevant to anything???

I build as many cities as I can in the expantion phase (5-10, depends on the map), and later when I conquer more land, I might squeze a few more cities in between the other ones to maximize the land use. On the standart map, I usually end up with 20-30 cities before going for conquest.
