I was in the forums discussing about the ways that the computer wins, and if it sets goals for its own victories. I thought I'd ask: How often do you lose the game, in any fashion?

1-25 for me, although it's probably around 5% since there are so many ways to beat the AI.

I never lose. I quit before that happens. :D I either get a good game with at the beginning which I win or I restart right away. I haven't tried regent yet though.

I lose about half the time..darn Regent!! I get a bad starting location or declare war on the closest civ and lose the initial battle then the Barbs run in on me. So yeah, about half the time..do restarts count? LOL

I used to lose half of the games I play. Now I started to play half times I used to play.
Now I don't lose anymore.
:) :) :)

Prematurely quitting rules. But this time, I wanted to see if I could turn things around, and it seems to work.

I lost 1 out 3 at Deity level because AI always seem to be able to build the UN very fast.:( I have never lost a game at any other levels.:)

I'm like slothman, i sometimes quit if the world is really messed up (covered by huge expanses of jungle) or if i'm just getting pummeled. But usually i just fight till the end. It's pretty fun being the underdog because there's no pressure!

:suicide:

I lose so frequently it's depressing. On Civ I I used to win the 95% of the games on level 2 (whatever it was called) 90% of the games on Regent level, and won 66.6% of the time on Monarch level - after playing for a year or so. I never won on Diety level, even when "cheating" (saving before entering a village, and rebooting and re-entering until I got a technology). I was talking to a guy at college who claimed he could win most of the time at Diety level. I offered him $100 to show me how. He declined. Figured he was bluffing.

On this new version it wasn't until recently that I won for the first time at level 3; this version seems so tough I also quit when I don't like my starting position (I consider this a loss), I've tried King level once, and was humiliated.

On regent and above I only have a chance at winning if I have multiple luxuries to trade for tech or cash. Otherwise I'll be launching knight attacks versus infantry.

never won. mostly because i quit prematurerly. verry anoying when those zulus come with 400+ cavalrys when i only have 95 pikemen to counter....

I can win every single time on civ2 deity. Just using a caravan based trade strat makes it easy (although there are many other ways).

You are probably not expanding enough... look for some of the ICS strategy threads in the strategy forum, they should help your game considerably.

As for me, I win virtually every time on any level. The only times I've actually lost deity have been times when the AI attacks very early on (say 3000BC with a big warriors/archers stack), when I get past that stage human expansion capabilities and superior war capabilities outwit and out expand the AI.

I await the coming of MP.

I've only lost one complete game (UN defeat); however, I restart enough to put me around a 25% loss rate. Also, I've yet to play above monarch, except I am currently playing (slowly) this month's GOTM which is emperor level.

I lose about 20-25% of my games - play predominantly at monarch level. I consider abandoning a game as a loss even when done at the beginning since you've basically forfeited the game to the AI when you do that.

If I lose, it is either a quick wipeout or a rank loss. In civ 3, I have only gotten to a rank loss once (although I sense another one is on the way). I usually give up if the odds are stacked unbeleivably against me. I have been killed off maybe five times. I have won about ten times.

It bothers me that the AI never strives for a culture win. Can't wait to play against humans.

Depends on the definition of losing. If I don't get a good starting location I will restart after eight or ten turns. I don't count that as a loss since I haven't even met the enemy yet. Sometimes I get a good starting location and notice a neighbor within about ten squares of me, and he already has three cities. I usually restart. That's borderline, but I don't consider that losing, but a matter of a bad location.

Lastly, I will frequently play to the point where I have no hope of winning and quit. These are the losses.

Technically I have only won one game - by domination. I played five or six to the year 2000 or so while so far ahead that a score win was assured. I just didn't feel like playing them out and there weren't enough turns left to win by another method.

I'd put it at fifteen percent victory.
