I browsed and haven't found this exact sentiment. Someone mentioned that your civ should be in the middle of the map. I agree but would like to expand that. I think not only should you be the center but only be able to see what you have discovered. In the beginning once you place your first city, that city would take up all of the map. When you explored the place where your city is would get smaller on the map as your knowledge expanded. Then you would never know how big the map is until you take a shot from space and you wouldn't know your place in it. Also a 3-D map is in order. You should be able to cross the poles.
