How to avoid/undo Warmonger label

My first game post patch was pretty horrible. The AI's spammed joint wars on me through out the whole game, even Ghandi was joint warring with me and i was playing as a peaceful builder the whole game! Downright broken AI currently.

I always punish the AI neighbors who almost always suprise attack me every game, this time It was Germany, though 2 others had already joint war me. I took his capital then the rest of the world denounced me for been a warmonger! Ridiculous...

I just completed a post-patch Deity game and I think that warmonger penalties are still far too high. I took one city the entire game--in the Medieval Era I DOW'd and conquered a city-state. That's it.

That got me denounced by all six AIs (only one of whom had previously denounced me) and poisoned all my relationships for the next two eras. Meh.

I really think they should rethink the whole concept of the warmonger penalty. Why does this need to be in the game? Civ IV didn't have one, and that game has the best and most functional diplomacy of any civ game I've ever played. AIs should hate you if you attack them or if you attack one of their friends. Other than that, they shouldn't care how much you fight.

In my last game I was on friendly terms with Trajan, and out of the blue he declared war on me. After smacking him around and capturing a few of his cities, he asked for peace. As I quite like Trajan, I agreed and handed back his cities. Checked in the Diplomacy screen the next turn that I'd earned a whopping -93 (or thereabouts) warmonger penalty.
Every other war I had in that game the most I ended up with was -30 warmonger penalty, and that was even when I razed a few cities of opponents. So I'm guessing the calculations for warmongering were all messed up. Hopefully this patch sorts things out.

Warmonger normally decays one point per turn though. (Well that was pre-patch).

Yeah. Some of the rest of us considered the diplomacy of that game completely broken considering that was one of the main ways in which you suck the bonuses out of the Deity AI.

I bet that triggered the new heavy penalty for taking a civilization's last city. Maybe grabbing a city state (or two) in the early game will not be the default strategy anymore.

If you want to avoid the penalty, don't take cities. And especially don't take City States because that seems to trigger Warmonger with everyone, whereas just taking normal cities (not last cities) only seems to trigger Warmonger with the Civ that's losing the city. Basically, stop using war to overcome AI bonuses.

If you're going to be warring to take AI stuff, they're going to hate you all game. Them's the breaks.

But I thought warmonger was a "global" value, not something that is per-civ specific?
