How to deal with burnout

I haven't put that much time into this game, compared to some. Just under 300 hours according to Steam, but I am feeling a tad burned out. I want to continue playing and have it as fun as it once was. How?

I can't bring myself to play anything but domination because waging war is what's fun to me. I also can't bring myself to play above Prince because all that does is let the AI cheat.

Are there any mods that tinker with victory conditions? Cause it to where you have to take over every last city in the game to win? Anything like that at all?

Any advice on how to deal with burnout?

Sometimes you just need a break. I got a bit burned out around 300 hours, too. I keep coming back though and have well over 1,000 into this game.

I'd also not worry about the AI cheating up to about Emperor difficulty. For the most part you won't notice their "cheats", but it will keep the game competitive and likely keep your interest up longer.

You could also switch things up a bit. Try out some of the scenarios, add "rules" on to yourself as extra challenges, etc.

When I'm bored of Civilization games, I play Paradox games.

When I'm bored of both, I play shooters

I know the feeling. When I first discovered civ it was on vesion 3. I was in awe of the game and played in non stop for months. Gradually the novelty wore off, and I got bored just piling units in one stack and winning. So I packed in playing it. Civ 4 didn't grip me at all and I very quickly stopped playing it. I have played civ 5 for roughly six months now and still find it extremely entertaining. I keep waiting for the boredom to set it, but it just doesn't seem to happen. Maybe it is the 1 unit per tile that makes the difference to me, I don't know. It could be the beautiful graphics or the brilliant religion aspect of the game. There just seems something more appealing about civ 5 than the others I have played, and I haven't experienced the burnout that civ 3 and 4 gave me.
Maybe Brave New World will ignite your interest again?

If you like war then you should like King or Emperor on Continents, on either difficulty level you'll have a runaway on the other continent and it will be a challenge to time and execute your invasion with tech growth and exploration.

What's wrong with the AI cheating? The AI is dumb and can't operate as efficiently as a human. Cheats— like when the AI fires with a newly built archer without moving it from the city first—just substitute times for when a human opponent would have planned things out better.

Personally I switch to Grand Theft Auto when I'm burned out, but I want to try Paradox games at some point. It's been probably two years since I played something other than Civilization or Grand Theft Auto though, both franchises are deep enough I never feel the need for anything else.

My kind of person I give your comment 5 out of 5 I do the same thing as you.

Mix up your gaming. For example, I play a lot of shooters with the occasional RPG game. When I need a change of pace, I relax with some Civ5. Moderation...

wow... if you're burned out then don't play. Talk about first world problems. go outside. read a book. etc.

Mine for fighting burn out:

If at the end of a game having felt tired of the game, take a week long break. Read some books / watch some DVDs / etc.

Another one for if you reach the point at which this is no good standard difficulty level is start your own mod. (I'm trying to get it mine where the AI does decent on Prince level handicap instead of Chieftain). I'm primarily testing increasing minimum city placement allowed by one; along with an across the board increase in happiness flavor & across the board decrease in expansion flavor. I'm secondarily testing increased effectiveness of espionage buildings, particularly Police Station & National Intelligence Agency. (Having NIA more effective in the city its built than the rest of the empire.)

Also play as a Civ you haven't won at yet. If you have won as everybody, then select Random.

I switch between civ5 and the total war series this helps, also love age of empires 3.
But if you are really burned out take 2 weeks off and you will be ready to fire up another game.
To me civ5 is the most addictive civ yet!!

Try dropping a difficulty level so you can experiment more. I was getting burnt out of the typical "4-city-Tradition-rush NC" Deity strategy, so when I dropped down to Immortal to try some new Civs and strategies, I had waaay more fun.

Mods, mods mods mods mods. No joke. I was in your shoes. Get some new civs, etc. Really helps.

Try the mongol scenario. Hordes of fast moving keshiks really get the blood flowing.

Take a break and come back later, lol?

I have been Civving for nearly 15 years (I feel old :( ) and I 'only' have 500 hours logged against Civ5 ... I have recently got back into it in a big way but I have often have breaks of several months where I didn't play any Civ at all.

I am having fun trying to maximize the traits and UU/UB of the different leaders ... but like you said, the best strategy is usually to conquer the other civs, even when you are playing for a cultural win, and doubly so when the AI has massive production/happiness bonuses at the higher levels.

Then there's the small issue of a new expansion coming out soon ... I see another 500 hours that will be logged against it, mostly with the Zulu lol. ;) And maybe these new tourism/archaeology strategies, which sound a bit weird, might actually make something other than conquering other civs viable in the late game - who knows. (I kind of doubt it and a part of me secretly hopes not because late game war is a lot of fun, especially with nukes!)

I've been playing the civ series since it was on floppy disk with the original and well over 2,000 hours on civ 5 thru steam. When I'm bored with it, it goes back on the shelf for a while, usually a few months to a year.

One thing I do to sort of challenge myself is to play with goals in mind aside from just winning. Something like, winning (discover all tech or whatever you choose) before turn 750 with 900 happiness, ect ect. That gives me some excitement to see if I can do it. Aside from that I play with a lot of mods, which for me makes it more difficult because I try to build EVERY wonder in game while still competing and fending off the AI. Don't settle for whatever victory conditions the game gives you, create your own challenges.
