It turns out that even though strat resources are hidden at first, they still provide resource bonuses. This is useful for finding them early on because you can know that any square that produces, for instance, two extra shields and four extra commerce has uranium, two extra commerce has rubber, one extra commerce has saltpeter etc.
This is great for knowing whether you'll have access to resources early on.

That's very useful, i'm going to look for that in the future. However It seems to me like that was one thing that the designers of CvIII over-looked.

I've tried this with iron and horses, and it doesn't work. The mountains where the iron showed up gave the same shields as the mountain next to it--until after I bought iron working. Then it gave me an extra shield.

The grassland square didn't give me any commerce until after I discovered the wheel. Then it gave me the commerce.

Are you sure this works with Uranium and Rubber? I could definitely use extra shields and commerce, even if the Uranium doesn't show up until way later.

IS this true?
You mean to tell me that I can simply inspect all of my trerritory by right clicking and checking the terrain info, I can see this - or do I actually have to build a city and have the terrain be within borders?

UMMMM I went back and tried it on the world map that had customized, I knew where all the resources where, but there were no early bonuses.

Newbie, you sure some of those resources wern't located next to a river?

I've too tried on my custom map, still no early bonus.
i've put all the resources around my starting position, so i know where they are, but still no effect before they discovered.
