Basically its in the topic :)
For some reason when i create my first city, the surplus food actually gets turned into production hammers. For this reason my capital does not grow past 1 since it does not produce any food.

Anybody know what im doing wrong?

Thanks.

it is because you are creating a worker. Workers and Settlers use Hammers+Food to be built. if you build something else you will see that your city will grow.

Because a city building workers or settlers does not grow, the consensus is that you shouldn't build a worker until your city is at least size 2. This is particularly true if your second worked tile has 4 food + shields. By growing, you get a net gain of +2 on the worker/settler production.

The only time I build a worker first is if I can produce the worker in 12 turns and by building the worker I can get a quick +3 food/shields production from a nearby resource and I can get a second resource exploited soon after I hit size 2.

Also, before you have researched some tech advances, there are very few improvements the workers can perform to the terrain.

Why are some able to see hammers on the screen, and others not? Have they found a fix for that glitch?

Huh?

In responce to the other msg's...becareful about pumping out one too late though. Both Workers and settlers, or you will be really in trouble once the barbarians start a knocking.

I also have the same problem... ALL I see are just the bread icons nothing about hammer icons nor coin icons. IT is really frustrating!
