How to humble a cocky AI player (Romans, Americans...)

If you are constantly annoyed by and AI player that you are superior too and they always give you a hard time when you want to make any deal. Basically they always try to get the better end of a trade or always ask for gifts. You try to attack there border cities, but there response is initially too strong and u dont want to deadlock in war for many turns. Just ferry your units over to their capital and snag it with a precision offensive. Then sell their capital back to them for an overwhelming price and move on with building and trading.

Great idea. Q: Should you destroy the great wonders prior to selling it back, or does that bring the price down too far?
