How to move to all spaces?

I have a very basic question about Civ2.

In Civ(1), all board positions are easily accessed. However, in Civ2 I find I can only get to half of the board spaces (diamonds, actually) using the up/down/right/left arrow keys. Is it possible to move to the other half of the diamonds on the board (ie, board spaces), and if so, how?

I've tried hitting up/right simultaneously, but the just moves me up and then right (or visa versa). I've also tried <SHIFT>right and <CONTROL>right, to no avail.

I thinking I'm missing something basic here.

Your help much appreciated,
Mike

The problem comes when you play on a lap top with no number pad. Even worse the mouse pad on a lappie is not as good as a real mouse when playing Civ.

You can simply hit the numbers along the top of the keyboard. They work just like the number pad but it is awkward. You can set Num Lock to make number pad in the keyboard but then you lose some letters, particularly 'i' and 'm'. Far better is to use the named keys - Home, End etc. The only problem is remembering which key does what.

I remember it as:

Page Up and Page Down go right (East). Page Up is upwards, Page Down is downwards.

Home and End go left (West). Home is upwards, End is downwards.

It was strange at first but now it seems natural.

I had that problem when I bought my first laptop. I ended up buying an external number pad for the express purpose of playing Civ 2.

Don't you guys use the mouse to move? On a laptop, I prefer it to the number pad, and you can also select a faraway destination and the unit will go there without your having to direct every move. However, it's easy to make a mistake in a delicate situation, so when fighting I go back to the number pad.

How about when launching a nuke?
It consumes a lot of time moving a 10 nukes on a distant continent. Click the unit, drag the mouse, then BOOM!.

I always do dragging when scouting.:)

I tried dragging a nuke once. I ended up BOOMING! some people I didn't want to - my own Engineers that were standing by to clean up the resulting pollution.

Slight miscalculation there... :(

The "G0" cursor is also a lil' bit confusing, i dunno where the pointer is. Now it's all fine. I modded it.:)

I want my mod to be finished ASAP. *sigh*

Whenever I try the mouse, the unit always gets stuck on the coast, and I have to manually move it.

If I have a real mouse then that is the easiest thing. On a desktop PC I normally play two handed - combining direct commands from the keyboard with movement from mouse and number pad. But I find the mousepad on a laptop awkward for use in CIV, Colonization (same interface) and Minesweeper.

I'm seriously considering getting an external Keyboard (with a separate number pad) and Mouse for my lappie.
