How to preven Other European Colonist - from Independence?

Can Priviteer be used?
Privateers mostly have nuisance value, though early on they can stunt the growth of rival colonies. Some people report that they make a profit on their piracy--er, privateering--but I get too many sunk to make a direct profit, however the combination of hurting rivals and stealing some cargoes may produce a relative profit.

One approach is to raze early and often so they never get established. This is especially effective with the Spanish between their initial veteran and their benefits (check out the "Conquistador" strategy article). The Europeans tend to try to resettle the same locations so you can destroy them over and over. Sometimes a country will abandon the New World for a hundred years or even permanently.

And what if they do declare independence? You can come to the aid of their mother country against these filthy rebels who would undermine the divine right of kings...before you can.

A side benefit of all this is building up a force of experienced troops to use later in your WoI.

Yeah, I have found that privateers often lose in one on one engagements. So next game, I will send them out in two's, so the second unit can get the kill (and cargo) plus the XP for a promotion. Two or three promotions and I'll bet they won't lose too often.

That's probably true, but they are *so* expensive that I hate to lose them. It seems like the opportunity cost is too high...but it is fun to have one or two out there while doing routine economic buildup.

well if you get skirmisher 1 and 2 then do down veteran while hunting in (wolf) packs your experienced privateers with stay alive while yielding you good cargo captures late game

HermannLombard, dude, you are buying them? You only buy one or two at the start. After that you make your own. They don't cost so much that way.

I don't think I've ever bought more than two. Well, in my one naval victory I might have bought three, I forget, but I ended up with nine plus John Paul Jones' frigate. I used my two GG as admirals so all but one of those privateers had two stars, and the admirals were 3-star ships. My two early privateers had navigation promos and maybe a star each, no skirmish promos. I had expected those to get more experience but I "accidentally" exterminated the other Europeans and they didn't come back.
