how to settle islands?

hi, i'm new at civ III, sorry if this question is basic.

but how do you settle islands (i.e. send a ship over and settle a new city)?

i've looked around and can't find anything on this?

if you look in the Civ3 general discussions forum you'll see a FAQ thread and a "newbie thread" - those are good places to look for info (if you didnt already) and the newbie thread is a good place to ask simple questions like this one (i.e. dont need a lot of explanation to ask)

to answer the question...

you need a settler (at least) and a ship. Load the settler onto the ship (either in a port city or not) and sail to the island. Then if you try to move the ship into the island you'll get a dialog asking if you want to unload the units on the ship. Do so. Then the settler can build a city next turn.

Hint: you'll need at least one harbor on the island, so coastal cities are the best, unless it's a weird island.

Sorry I have to post something on this even if it's off-topic. You really should try to answer people's questions before pointing them to the newbie thread. It really makes them feel dumb when you're basically saying you're in the wrong thread and you could have gotten this info elsewhere. In a sense you're also calling them a newbie. Even if they are, and even if they know they are, it's really not something people want to be called. Anyway I like that the newbie thread is there, and it's always good to point it out to people, but it just seems people don't know how to do it in a nice way. This wasn't even one of the really bad ones, but it was here so I thought I'd comment.

Moderator Action: Let's stop this before it turns into another flame war over a newbie. MadScot was merely being helpful to point a new user to a newbie FAQ thread, and then tried to help, as the announcement by Gonzo_for_Civ pointed out in Civ3 Gen a while ago.
