Excuse the gross stupidity here, but would anyone be kind enough to explain to me the basics of trading. In CivII I used to trade with everyone, as much as I could. CivIII's obviously different. Am I right in saying you contact another civ and offer them one of your trading goods in return for gold each turn? How do you know what to charge? Do you ever swap trading goods rather than asking for gold? If anyone could just offer me a few tips I'd be a lot wealthier! Thanks.

As for knowing what to charge, look up at your advisor. He'll give you a hint: "They probably will be insulted by this offer" or "This offer is probably acceptable" that sort of thing.

Yes, you can trade items for items, rather than for gold as well.

When you get into the screen, on the left you'll see what they can bring to the table, and on the right what you can bring to the table.

If you want to trade lets say one of your luxuries for one of their technologies, you would click on their technologies, then the one you want. Then click on your luxuries, then the one you want to offer. in the middle of the screen you see the offer, and your advisor will tell you whether the offer is likely to be accepted or not.

Hope that helps.

Hi,
I find it best to take an item that I have and put it on the table and then click, "What are you willing to offer me for xxxx?" I usually get pretty good deals that way. Also, NEVER trade tech to the opponent during THEIR turn! Wait for your turn. If you do it on their turn, they will immediately turn around and trade it with the other nations. So it is best if you decide to trade any tech, to trade it to all the civs and get what you can out of it. Good luck!

Oh, and just in case you are still confused on how to start trading, it is the F4 key - then double-click on the Civ you want to trade with.
